Hello!  Disclaimer - this is not my area of expertise, but I’m trying to figure out what piece of equipment is required to set up my parents’ old record player to play through our Sonos system.  I’d like to be able to gift it to my husband for his upcoming birthday!  Every time we start to dig in and research to figure it out we both get frustrated.

 

We have an old Playbar as our main speaker (plus a play:1, two One SLs, and a Roam).  We currently have it set up running through a recording interface (I think - it says M Audio M Track on it) + guitar amp (Orange Crush 20RT) + my husband’s laptop (I’m not sure how he’s managing it on there).  The quality is really poor that way - almost unbearable to listen to.  It sounds like it’s skipping constantly.

 

Ideally, the record player would not be directly connected to the playbar because there isn’t really any space for it nearby.  That isn’t a deal breaker, just a reasonably high priority.

 

I’m not sure if we need a preamp, a Sonos Port, something else?  If there’s an easy solution that wouldn’t require buying anything that definitely works too.  Any advice would be so appreciated!  Thank you!

What model is the record player? Can you post photos of the front and back of the record player? 

Will try - getting a lot of errors with the photo uploader currently!  It’s an orange banner that says “Something went wrong, please check your link and try again.” I tried just copy/pasting and it gave me the same error and said the file was larger than 5 MB (it isn’t).

I’m pretty sure that turntable has a built-in phono preamp. So all you need is a Sonos device with line-in like a Port or Five. If you don’t need an extra speaker, go with the Port.

Thank you!  I just googled the model (Sony PS LX250H) and it does look to have a built in preamp.  Really appreciate your responses!

The manual does not show an internal preamplifier. While the mixer might have enough gain to overcome the low output, the required equalization will be missing and the resulting sound will be poor.

Also, for a turntable this old, the stylus may need to be replaced. Finally, make sure that the stylus force is correct.

Hmm, you are correct. It’s not listed in the specs and it depends on which column you follow in the manual.

Just so this is full circle - bought the Five and he loves it!  It’s working perfectly.  Thank you!
