Hi, I used a Echo Dot to have Alexa integration on a Sonos Port connected to a Onkyo “Works with Sonos” receiver (but this last part is working well).

I grouped Echo Dot and Sonos Port in the same group in the Alexa app, and set the Sonos Port as default speaker.

In Italy Audible service is not available among Sonos services (just incredibile… but this is the situation). However, you can indeed use Audibile through Alexa.

I noticed the following:

  • if I give the Alexa command through a Sonos One I have in my system (in another room), book reading comes thru my amplified speakers (“Alexa read the book in the kitchen”)
  • if I use the Alexa app and select the group said above, book reading come thru my amplified speakers
  • if I give the Alexa command through the Echo Dot (in the same group as Sonos Port, with Sonos Port as default speaker) Alexa won’t execute Audible through Sonos Port, but through the Echo Dot.

This does not make sense to me.

Note: using the Echo Dot with supported services like Amazon Music, will correctly play music through Sonos Port.

Hello @Steelstar. Thank you for reaching out. I understand you are trying to play audio on both your Echo Dot and your Sonos devices simultaneously. As of right now, this is known limitation of Alexa and Sonos, as their software and hardware are unable to sync up perfectly. I will be more than happy to pass this along to our development team to see if this can be added in the future. We strive to improve Sonos in every way and we cannot do it without your help.

Hi Richard, I know Echo and Sonos devices cannot play together, this was not my target. I want to use the Echo Dot just to give Alexa capability to my ceiling speakers connected to a Sonos Port. What I find strange is that if I ask to read a book from a Sonos One, sound will play thru my ceiling speakers, while doing that with the Echo, this won't happen. Playing music is working fine. Even using the Alexa app and selecting my ceiling speakers (Sonos Port) will work. Is this a limitation specific to Echo devices?

PS: I underline this happens only with Audible, a service not supported in Italy by Sonos. Other services like Tune in, Amazon Music work perfectly

Thank you for confirming that information. When you ask your Echo Dot to play a song, are you specifying your Port’s Room Name?  If you do not specify a room name in your command, the Echo Dot will play to itself versus the Port. Interesting that this only happens with Audible, as other services have the same results.
