I have Flac files on a NAS. They play on my whole system. How can I get confirmation that HD content is being played? Thanks
If the FLAC files were created in HD, they will play in HD.
My S2 player doesn’t show “HD” on currently playing page. Where else would it say it?
From memory, this is a feature that was “upgraded” during the May release, and so that symbol no longer appears. If so, the feature might be back at some stage, or it might not.

HD never showed for local library playback, it was limited to streaming services only.
If your ears can’t tell, does it even matter?

Sorry - not true. I am currently listening to a track from my local library. It’s a FLAC, and the display shows an “HD” symbol. If I listen to the same track in 32-bit coding, it shows the “HiRes” symbol instead (though it doesn’t play the track properly, because it tries to play it even though Sonos does not support 32-bit encoding).
I should add - neither of the above is from memory - this is what I am seeing on the app right now (running the pre-May release).
My flac collection used to show up. Thanks
So am I actually getting Flac audio since it’s not showing up. Sounds great but I would like confirmation
As I said, the feature has either been retired or is on holiday. If the latter, I doubt Sonos will place any great priority on bringing it back - they have more important problems to resolve.
But, given that AFAIK Sonos has not added the ability to re-encode FLACs on the fly, if it’s stored in HD then it will be played in HD. You can probably get confirmation by jumping forward a track. If it takes a long time for all of your speakers to get back in sync, it’s probably in HD!

Huh, ok, I stand corrected. <fx:tries to find some FLAC files to try this out>
Can someone post an image of this note?

What do you mean by “this note”?
What you are seeing that indicates “HD”.
What you are seeing that indicates “HD”.
Here is an example. This is playing a lossless ALAC (16-bit/48 kHz) file from my music library on the old S2 app:
And here is an example of playing a 24-bit/48 kHz FLAC file. It displays “HiRes”:
So does the identification of hd or flac only occur on S2?? I’m using new app.
So does the identification of hd or flac only occur on S2?? I’m using new app.
Unfortunately Sonos removed the HD and HiRes indicators on the new app. There has been no word of them returning.

Sonos can only play files with a sample rate of 48kHz and, as far as I know, Sonos does not down convert anything. So what’s the point of reporting the “HD” icon?
I don’t think FLAC files are beaning streamed as MP3s.

I found some FLAC files online and you are 100% correct: the “Gold” S2 app displays “HD” and, more amazingly, my own Windows app also displays “HD” - I had forgotten I had even written that code! If you can point me to a publicly available FLAC file that shows “HiRes” I can add support for that too.

Sonos supports audio files with sample rates up to 48kHz. And there are plenty of audio formats that Sonos supports (like MP3s) that aren’t lossless. Read more here:

Find a 24-bit/48kHz FLAC or ALAC file and it will display “HiRes”.

Thank you, I am updating my app to display streaming details of local files now, eg:
and for FLAC:
I don’t know the exact criteria for “HD” or “HiRes” so I’m just going to show the numbers.
How do you update app. to display HD?
How do you update app. to display HD?
You mean that Sonos S2 app? The only way I know of now is to revert the app to a pre-May release, but most people won’t be able to do that now, because if you accept the latest firmware for the speakers, you can (I am led to believe) no longer revert to an older version of the app.

You can’t. This feature is only available on the old S2 app.
