The SLP-4 has multiple doorbell sound options and runs ~$450 but does a lot of things not needed. Rather spend this cash on something else like another Connect:Amp.
Any other options on this?

With something like this you could probably automate something if it support advanced enoughscripting solutions.
Otherwise any mini computer with networking should do (rasperry pi for instance)

yep, I have been watching Twine for a while. Gonna take the leap after it comes out.
I know that Sonos can be controlled by 3rd party software. Clearly, a trigger would stop the music from playing and instead play the mp3.

How would Twine be integrated with Sonos and mechanism for pause and doorbell mp3 play?
It would identify the click, and send the appropriate HTTP-signal with a reference to a hosted MP3 (or a file from your library) to play.
Hopefully Sonos would continue in the queue once the mp3 has finished playing.
However, since the device hasn't been released yet, it's hard to say how much flexibility their proprietary tools will be, and if they will allow one to handcraft the SOAP-message required for the player to trigger the bell tune.

Lextend is a generic Sonos gateway. Lextend has a sonos doorbell feature (video attached)
and many other, even zone dependent features. Volume up, down, track up, down etc.
All features can be triggered by sending specific UDP packet to Lextend. For further information stefan.egger@egger-enertech.ch
