SONOS app on Apple iPad

Brightspeed Fiber with GigaSpire BLAST u6.2 Router

I have used SONOS for years with both DSL and Spectrum cable. Today I had Brightspeed Fiber installed. The router has one SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

Sonos products are not found on the network and of course will not connect.

Have tried …

  • Disabling the 5GHz radio in order to make ONLY 2.4GHz available
  • Disabling the router firewall entirely so there was no filtering of traffic in or traffic out

And assistance would be greatly appreciated. I’m all out of ideas to make SONOS work. Thank you !!!

At least temporarily, have you tried wiring a Sonos device to the router with an Ethernet cables?

@Airgetlam … I just ran an Ethernet cable from the Playbase to the router and Sonos products showed up in the router devices list. AND the system is recognized in the Sonos app on my iPad AND music is playing no problem.

NOW … just need to figure out how to get Sonos to work wirelessly so I can roll up this 25ft Ethernet trip hazard. Shoot

One thing I can’t figure out at this point … I deleted the old network from the app’s “Manage Networks” … but can’t figure out how to add a network. I don’t see an option to manually do that in the app.

I think (and it’s been a while since I looked), there should be a ‘plus’ sign on that page.

But great news that you’ve gotten this far :)

Hmm. Just looked at that page in my S2 controller. No plus, but a big button that says ‘update networks’. I assume that scans for all readable networks, and allows you to connect to one.

By the way, you may want to check the ‘security’ on your network, and make sure it conforms to what Sonos can join, as indicated on the Sonos Network Requirements FAQ. I’d be cautious about ‘newer’ or ‘extended’ security (WPA-3 RSK?), for instance. I don’t think the Linux kernel for Sonos has been updated with the ‘latest’ of all of those. At the least, I’d try an ‘older’ version, get set up, then boost it up until the Sonos can’t connect. Just a thought, mind you, may be an entire red herring.

Thanks @Airgetlam … have to run to town to return old ISP equipment and will try some things you mention later. Right off the top of my head I don’t recall seeing a big button that says “update networks” in the app on my iPad, which I did check for and found Sonos software is up to date. Thanks !!!

Heh. We’ll see. I happen to be typing this on an iPad as well.

When you get back, assuming S2 current client, click on the Gear icon (top right), then Manage (appears directly under the Gear icon), then the ‘Network’ button (near the bottom in landscape mode), then ‘Manage Networks’, and you should see the button.

I’m not able to remember how S1 works, sorry.

@Airgetlam … Thank you for your patience and trying to help. Thank you

While the software update within the Sonos app said Up To Date, I checked the Apple app store and found there was indeed an app update available.

Now I see the menu items you spoke of. However when I click on “Manage Networks” I get a pop up that says “Update the network settings for your products so they can connect to your WiFi” … “Note: This will only work with certain products.” … And it doesn’t work for my products. My Sonos system is the old Sonos stuff I guess.

Seems like I’ve had my system for a decade or longer … Playbase, 2 Play one’s and a sub. I stream music and use as theater surround.

Anyway, the ONLY way I’ve gotten the Sonos system to appear on the router, in the list of router devices, is with the use of an Ethernet cable. Then everything works fine. I’ve fumbled around and tried everything I know to try in not only the Sonos app but the router settings.

For the time being I guess I’ll have to leave the Ethernet cable connected and figure out some way to bury the 25ft trip hazard.

On my network:

Desktop and Laptop running Linux

Amazon Fire Tablet

Amazon Dot

Amazon Kindle Voyage

Apple iPad

Two TCL Roku TV’s

Motorolla cell phone

Not a single problem connecting any of those devices. Only problem is connecting Sonos. I’m sure I’m overlooking something unless maybe I’ve found the unicorn router that never works with Sonos. The thing is though, Sonos sure isn’t very user friendly when it comes to connecting with some wireless networks apparently. More trouble than the average consumer should have to go through. Maybe the newest generations of Sonos products are different … dunno.

[thinking out loud]

Riddle me this: Why can’t the Sonos app just find available networks and then allow log on to a selected network like most every other device on the planet?

And while I’m thinking out loud: Why would I even consider additional or replacement Sonos products when I can’t even connect what I already have wirelessly?

[/thinking out loud]

Since Sonos works when Ethernet is run to the router, I think the problem might be with some router wireless settings. I looked up Sonos supported WiFi modes and found my older Sonos products work on 802.11b and 802.11g … checked the router setting and found 2.4GHz wireless mode is listed as 11ng but can find no way to change that setting in the router.

I’ve tried to reach out to the router mfg. to see if it’s even possible to change that setting and any other ideas they may have. Hope to hear back from them.

In router literature online, I find …

The GigaSpire supports the following 802.11 standards on its wireless radios:
• 5 GHz: 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6), 802.11ac, and 802.11n
• 2.4 GHz: 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6), 802.11n, 802.11g

If you want to keep that router maybe grab an Access Point and wire it to the router, keep it several (minimum 3, 6 is better) feet from the router. Set it to use different channels than the router and a different SSID.

You want it in pure AP mode so turn off things like Client-Isolation or any internal server processes.

@Stanley_4 … Thank you. All that is a bit over my head and something I’ve never had to get into before. Will have to research all that’s involved and try and get up to speed. Sounds pretty simple though … but I’ve said that before 😂

I HAVE to keep the router regardless. Unlike most networks that contain VoIP Home Phones … this Brightspeed Fiber setup has the phone plugged into the Router instead of the Modem. There is a phone port on the Modem but it is disabled. So if I ditch the Router, I’d have to ditch my Home Phone … well that’s what I would run into if I tried to use my old TP-Link AX-3000 Router that worked fine with Sonos.

So a logical alternative may be exactly what you have suggested !!! … now I just need to get up to speed and see what it entails. Thank You !!!

I have an Ubiquiti U6-Pro now, was using an AC-Lite for a while, and both I and Sonos love them, a bit complicated to set up but a good value. TP-Link is another brand that seems to get good ratings, I haven’t use theirs though.

I have no WiFi on my router and use the APs for all my WiFi and find it most reliable and since I got one powered over Ethernet it was easy to place in a central location and away from interference.
