Hello SONOS development team and beloved SONOS users,

I have been using SONOS Roam for about a year and have been truly impressed by its excellent sound quality. As a result, I decided to replace my PC speaker setup with SONOS speakers as well. My current setup includes a Beam and two One SLs, and my primary purpose is to enjoy music while working on my PC and to watch online live performances.

However, there is one dissatisfaction I have. The issue is that when playing audio from my PC, the rear One SLs do not play in full range. When playing music through the SONOS app, I can choose whether to play the surround speakers in full range or in ambient mode. However, when playing audio from my PC (i.e., in TV mode), this option is not available.

After researching this issue, I found the following post in the SONOS community. It explains that full-range support in TV mode is not available in order to sync the audio with the actors' lip movements. https://en.community.sonos.com/home-theater-228993/ability-to-change-tv-playback-to-full-in-surround-sound-settings-6831125

However, half of the reason I integrated SONOS into my PC environment is for music playback, and I do not need to sync with lip movements in this case. Would it be possible to add buffering to the audio input for the Beam so that full-range playback could be enabled for the rear speakers in TV mode? Additionally, in my setup, both the Beam and One SLs are connected via wired LAN cables. If all speakers set to surround are wired, I would be very grateful if the added buffering could be minimized.

I have tried disabling the surround setup and grouping the Beam and One SLs for playback. However, in this case, I noticed a slight timing delay between the front and rear speakers.

Moreover, after grouping, it is cumbersome to reconfigure TruePlay each time I reset the surround setup.

My connection setup is as follows: I use a USB SPDIF adapter to convert the audio from my PC to SPDIF, and then use the SPDIF to HDMI adapter that came with the SONOS Beam to connect my PC to the Beam.

I understand that it might be difficult to address this request, but I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know as soon as possible whether it would be possible to add this feature or not. This is because I would need an answer within the Amazon return window to make a decision. I was unaware that full-range playback from the rear speakers would not be available in TV mode when I made the purchase. Although I love the sound of SONOS, I will have to return it if this feature cannot be implemented. On the other hand, if my feature request is approved, I would definitely consider purchasing a SONOS SUB!

Please help me further enhance this already wonderful audio experience!

Thank you very much for your support!

If attaching to a PC was your sole purpose for purchase, I suggest a return. SONOS is not designed to support this use. Supporting this would require a fundamental redesign of SONOS’s use of the network and would likely decrease overall system reliability.

Thank you all in the Sonos community for your replies. I truly enjoy the sound quality of Sonos, and I really don’t want to part with this incredible audio experience if possible. It’s a bit disappointing to learn about the current limitations for using Sonos in a PC environment, but I believe that adding buffering to the audio input on the Beam could allow us to enjoy the rear speakers to their fullest. I sincerely hope that the development team might consider implementing this feature. Please note that adding audio buffering to the Beam is intended as an optional feature, which can be toggled on or off within the app. It is not meant to forcefully impact all Beam users.

Hi @Jiro

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Thank you - I've marked this thread as a feature request and it will be seen by the relevant teams for consideration. Keep the ideas coming!

Hi Jiro,

I completely understand your frustration regarding the lack of full-range playback on the rear One SLs in TV mode. It sounds like your setup is mostly focused on music, so the lip-syncing concern isn't really an issue. Buffering for the Beam in TV mode to allow full-range sound from the rear speakers would definitely enhance the music experience. I can see how your wired LAN setup could reduce any lag, making this change feasible. 🤞

The workaround of grouping speakers sounds like it’s not ideal with the timing delay and having to reset TruePlay. I really hope the SONOS team considers this feature. I’m in a similar situation and would also love to see this option for people like us using SONOS in PC environments! 🤔🎧

Best of luck with your decision 😊 and fingers crossed for the feature to be added! 🤞🔊

Personally I would return them and get something suitable for your use case.

Even if this is be accepted as a future feature update that can be made possible with current devices by a firmware update then I doubt it’s going to be high on a priority list.

Sonos will rarely if ever comment on future products and features so if you keep them past the Amazon return window you will have a system you are unhappy with for an unknown or permanent amount of time.

While it is possible to connect Sonos soundbars or Bluetooth speakers to PC systems for audio playback, as the previously linked article provides examples of, they wouldn’t be top of my list for dual use a PC audio speaker system and surround sound music setup.

A Ferrari F1 car is useless off--road but I doubt that a fundamental rethink is on the cards

Seems like an engineering problem.  Since searching a local music library took 6 months to ‘engineer’ after the AP fiasco, I can understand Sonos not wanting to do what seems a reasonable use for their products.
