The new Sonos Mobile App & Web App

Today we are introducing the most extensive app redesign ever, creating an unprecedented streaming experience that allows listeners to organize their favorite playlists, stations, albums and more from over 100 services on one customizable Home screen.

Home Screen

The new Home screen provides faster access to Sonos system controls with one easy swipe up, making tab to tab jumping a thing of the past. As a leader in sound experience that’s focused on creating a better way to listen, Sonos intentionally redesigned the app on a modern software platform for an easier, faster and better experience that can support more rapid innovation.

The reimagined app supports all existing S2 products and will be available globally through a software update for the S2 mobile app.

100+ streaming services, one Home screen

The redesigned Sonos app prioritizes a listening experience that’s human - allowing you to bring your true favorites front and center and giving you more control to make your streaming experience your own.

  • Get into your music (and off the app) faster: No need to tap between tabs — the new Home screen serves up all your favorite content and controls, all in one place. Quickly jump back into your recently played, browse libraries and recommendations from your preferred services, and fill your home with music and all the sounds you love.
  • Customize and curate: Enjoy unparalleled curation by designing your Home screen to reflect how you listen. Pin rows of your favorite content and services; then move, edit, or rearrange them to your liking.
  • Search every streaming library: Look for an artist, song, podcast, or audiobook across all your preferred streaming apps at once via an easy-to-use search bar that’s always available right on your Home screen.
  • Elevated system control: Swipe up from the bottom of your Home screen to seamlessly control your entire system and access a visual overview of what’s playing on each of your products, quickly group speakers, and dial in on the perfect volume from anywhere in the app.

Accessible from any modern web browser, a brand new web app allows listeners the same seamless system control as the mobile app.

The new Web App

The Web App will be available alongside the redesigned mobile app on May 7, 2024.

What happened with Sonos?  I can live with the unfortunate removal of the lock screen status on my iPhone. And the fact that Sonos can’t seem to have an equalizer in place to avoid loud and soft play.  But, I absolutely despise the new app. Is there a way to go back to the classic version? My devices do not sync properly to the volume control.  Nor do they respond in time with the play/pause toggle. I work from home and listen to my music all day, but this is an issue unless I use one device at a time, and never hit pause.  This is so frustrating to me.  I’m too invested in my system to switch.  But they have gone down hill in so many areas.

Awful!  Downloaded new app two weeks ago and nothing but problems.  New and improved my ass. Changing volume on several speakers in different rooms has become quite the challenge. Anytime I want to change to a different streaming platform  the banner at tops says “something went wrong, try again “.  How many ffnn times must I try??  Have to delete app and then download app again and sign in a then able to change to different streaming platform. How FU is that.  No problem for the last two years when first purchased and started using and expanding my Sonos. Why did I download “new” app??  Calling customer service also a challenge trying to UNDERSTAND the person on the other line. Sonos has failed big time

This update was the last straw for me. Years and years of using Sonos with thousands invested all while putting up with customer-hostile software updates. I’ve just purchased my first BluOS device and will be outfitting our cabin with that system.

I think many will follow…..

Anytime I try to do anything ion the app it says “oops something went wrong”. Yeah me buying Sonos crap is where I went wrong.

This new app is HORRIBLE...Please bring back the previous version. Take this app off and start over. Why get rid of all the good from the old app and not improve on anything? PLEASE...PLEASE bring back the previous version...PLEASE.

I agree - the strategy of bringing in small pieces of functionality every now and then over some months is seriously flawed.

Is it just me, or can you NOT rearrange or add songs to an already existing queue on this new update? If so, how? If not… SONOS! FIX. THIS. IMMEDIATELY.!

This is my biggest complaint for the new app. SONOS totally took off the best features of the previous app that worked GREAT and added new features that make it harder to work with the system while still not editing playlists. They need to allow us to go back to the previous app. Then trash the new app and start over to IMPROVE not make worse, a new app...

The new app is worthless. It disable the capability to listen to locally stored music. WHY? This was a bad decision. If they can’t figure this out quick, I trash my speakers and go back to speakers with wires. So much for a good company.

What bluos did you get?

...

Seriously. This would be like selling someone a car and then updating the operating system so that the steering wheels was controlled by AI instead of manual because there’s more profit there for the company.

...

Or more like: selling a family touring car and then in the hidden change it to be a one-seated car with a capacity to go only around the corner, having a service interval of 1 hour or 1 mile, whatever comes first. Air condition, parking assistant, etc., all ripped out in the night by the car seller - leaving that one seat in a close to useless car.

I could not help laughing when reading your text although there is not much to be laughed about when it comes to Sonos 2024. So thanks for this short moment, Jorwin

The problem with Sonos is they are doing really good smart speakers and this is the reason why it is hard to got a good Sonos replacement. But you are right about BluOS. It seems to be a very good product. Surely the best replacement.

Sonos did a big mistake with the last software version but the biggest mistake was not to roll back to the previous version

UPDATE / SOLUTION  - Restoring Music Library (PC / laptop on Windows 11)

Oh gosh I AM SOOOOOO FED UP WITH SONOS; only a few hours after I managed to have the alarm back (had of course to delete and reinstall the app, NOT something Sonos cared to inform us about) and now of course I cannot play anything from my own music library (not it is not on NAS, it is on an external drive connected to a laptop with Windowes 11) - and probaly all alarms linked to that library as I am sure it will be confirmed tomorrow morning…

SOOOOOO FED UP WITH SONOS. My music library does still appear as a source and all artists and albums are listed but nothing can be played. The fantastic beautiful wonderful amazing new Sonos app doesn't even react; the app on the laptop at least informs me that “access to //DESKTOP-Emy desktop ref number]/iTunes denied” at each attempt at playing a track from the music library. Of course the usual way of indicating to Sonos where to locate the library is nowhere to be found on the phone app and on the laptop app it is no longer functional (link to Music Libray Settings is greyed and nin clickable) .

I can't  take this anymore…. spending hours each day since the #5&8^^ app of yours showed up, endlessly looking for solutions, then getting yet another problem IF by any chance / as a miracle a solution is found . Sonos people: I have a life, you know? And it does not consist of solving problems YOU have created

I had promised myself not to do it considering waht happened with the new app update but I did update the Sonos controller on my laptop (windows 11) - that is how desparate I was following when the problem described above occured. Of course, my music library had completely disappeared in the new controller (which is not much different form the former as far as I can tell right now)  but it was again possible to access the Music Library Settings (under “Manage”).  Unfortunately: impossible to add again a music  folder to the Sonos system, thereby telling Somos where to fiund my own music collection. Below is how I could solve it (and I guess you can apply this solution without updating the Sonos Controller on your PC; not sure though).

SOLUTION:

  • in (File) Explorer right click on the music folder where your music files are (in my case, external drive connected to the lap top / My Music)
  • Click on “Properties”
  • Go to the tab “Sharing”
  • Click on “Share”
  • Select Sono Wireless Hi-Fi System in the dropdown menu and click Add; I’ve selected “Read” as permission Level as I do not think Sonos can -or should!- write in my own library (Won't Get Fooled Again) …
  • Ckick on ‘Share” anbd close “Properties”
  • After that I first closed the controller, opened it again and selected the folder containing my music files through Manage → Music Library Settings → Music Library → tab “Folders”
  • Once selected, the sonos controller ‘updated’ my music library (i.e. it reconstituted it in the Sonos System), which took some time as i have some 2.500 albums
  • but… it works now. My collection is again available in Sonos.

Hope this will help at least some of the community members.

What bluos did you get?

I’m just dipping my toes - a Node and two Pulse Flex 2i’s. At home I use Sonos connects w/ my analog gear and have Sonos:1’s mounted outside. I’ve even had a Sonos:1 sitting outside only partially protected from the elements for a few years and it still works. I will miss their sturdiness...

Be aware the soft touch plastic can become a sticky mess within 2 years if you are unlucky -.

Three years of Idaho weather - the buttons are shot but it still works

Why did you get rid of the volume numbers with the new app???

Please bring the numbers back!!!

Pretty sure in the AMA they said they would come back.

What a shitshow this is currently. If you haven’t updated to the latest app yet and you decide to revert back to S1:

To downgrade to S1 you need to factory reset your devices.

To downgrade them to S1 you need to update to latest version 18

When updated to version 18 it has no feature of backing to S1.

Yeah it was a pain in the @ss but well worth it for me. Setting up my favorites in my playlist was the longest part of it.

Not sure what phone OS you are on but on Android it is still possible to go back to S1. 16.1 is the last version of the Sonos S2 Android app that you can download from APKmirror and there is no 18 version. Perhaps you mean 80.0? If you have Android and Sonos S2 80.0 installed you can uninstall that and side load S2 16.1

Sonos has said that down the road they will be adding S1 downgrading support to the new app but does anyone really trust them on anything they say anymore?

This post has everything you need in it with screenshots I just took this morning:

https://en.community.sonos.com/components%2Dand%2Darchitectural%2D228999/downgrade%2Dsonos%2Dport%2Dfrom%2Ds2%2Dto%2Ds1%2D6892618?postid=16730575#post16730575

Also feel free to PM me with any questions and I will try my best to answer them. Just remember that I am not a Sonos support tech in real life but I played one on TV! 🤣😜

I will try it on my Android device today, thnak you. Yes I mean version 80.

I Just tried and downloaded the version 16.1 on my Android device. When choosing Downgrade to S1 I just get ” Your app is too old, you need to download the latest version”.

Its the same if I like to add the newly reset Move device to the current S2 install, your app is too old. I guess Sonos are now forcing us to update to the latest version for anything.

The new app is H O R R I B L E!!!!!!!

I don’t even understand how you could allow this to be released.  Was it even tested?

Doesn’t connect to the system 50% of the time, can’t find alarms and won’t let me play music because “Something went wrong”.  All the money I invested in your products is a waste at this moment.

Fix it or roll it back!!!!  It’s no way near as good as your marketing suggests.

With 80.00.08 app, I can now add / modify Alarms but they are not triggered at the said time either with Sonos Chime or Playlist.

Has anyone met the same issue ?

I just realized that the Alarm is triggered 1h later than the set time… Alarm set at 7am → it rings at 8am :(

I got the support over phone and they confirmed that it is a known issue that will be resolved (hopefully) with next app/firmware release

They rushed that hotfix out the door and didn't test it properly again! Could be a day light savings issue.

Again customers are the beta testers!

Can people please stop posting that Sonos didn’t run a beta (there’s at least one post in this topic from a beta tester who confirmed they reported all the most common issues) or doesn’t know how to do software development.

There is no way they didn’t know that removal of basic features such as queue management would annoy their customers. The fact is senior management wanted something released on that date, probably to coincide with the quarterly results and investor update, and they just didn’t care about the effect on their customers. A sad state of affairs that means I won’t ever spend another penny with them.

Agree, there is clearly a Management Bonus attached to the 7th May.

And yes, very sad.  This issue completely overshadows the upcoming Headphone launch that I was looking forward to.  Now I won;t be going near them.

Also disappointing how few Sonos vloggers/YouTube “experts” are calling Sonos out for this.

Also, stop telling us how much you've spent, asking for a rollback, etc.  Sonos will do whatever they want, whenever they want. Tips and suggestions, help, are useful posts for others.
