Available on October 24th, Sonos One is the smart speaker for music lovers. It’s everything you expect from a Sonos speaker, and now with built-in Alexa and microphones, you can control your entire Sonos system with your voice.

With seamless control, you can start music with your voice, add songs to your playlist from the Sonos app, and even start playing music from the Spotify app in a different room. Amazon Alexa comes built into the Sonos One, and we’re working hard to include more voice assistants in the future. First up will be Google Assistant.

Sonos One delivers rich, room-filling sound in a compact size. Two Sonos One players can be stereo paired, or become rear surround speakers in a 5.1 set-up. They’ll also be able to control the music on PLAYBASE or PLAYBAR while being set up as surrounds in the home cinema.

Some more details on Sonos One:

  • We use echo cancellation technology, created by the same engineering team that worked on Trueplay, which allows the speaker to still hear you over the music – even if it’s cranked up to 11.
  • The volume will intelligently lower, or “duck” when you speak to it so you don’t feel like you have to shout over the music.
  • The speaker includes a six-mic array that forms a beam and focuses on the person speaking to help make sure Alexa understands everything clearly.
  • Since this is a Sonos speaker, you can use TruePlay on an iOS device to easily tune Sonos One to sound great no matter where you place it in your home.
  • Capacitive touch controls on top, like Play:5 gen2 and the PLAYBASE, that you can tap and swipe. There's also a Mic button that can be tapped, to easily enable and disable the microphones.
  • Features a Join button and an Ethernet port on the back of the player.

Security and Microphones

Your security and data are very important to us, as we said in our blog here. With Sonos One we are keeping to that.

Sonos One is designed with extra security: An illuminated LED indicator light ensures you always know when your speaker’s microphones are active, or turned off. You can tap on the microphone symbol to enable or disable the microphones, the light is always tied to the microphone’s status. For security and privacy reasons, it’s impossible to disable the LED when the microphones are turned on.

Pre-order today on Sonos.com in stunning all black or all white for $199 US (€229 EUR, $299 AUD, $269 CAD, ¥1,680 RMB, 1,699 DKK, 1,999 NOK, 1,999 SEK, $4,999 MEX), available worldwide starting October 24.

Sonos One is voice-ready in the US, UK, and Germany. It’s everything you’d expect from a Sonos speaker to start with, and future-ready for when Sonos and a voice service launch together in your region if you’re located somewhere else.

While you wait, check out our community thread here to get yourself ready for the new Sonos One. Already have Alexa devices in your home? Check out our thread here.
So ... the Play 1 and the new Sonos One are the same price?

Despite the Sonos One having more capabilities, etc?

Are there reasons you would spend the same money for the Play 1 and not the Sonos One at this point?

The pricing is a little confusing, I would assume I would pay more for a speaker with more capabilities .... or less for a speaker with less capabilities.
Will I be able to buy this at an Apple Store in Canada when it launches? We currently don’t have Amazon Echo in Canada and this will be the first Alexa enabled device. I kinda want to compare Alexa with Siri using a demo.

You'll be able to buy the Sonos One world wide, but Alexa will only work with it in countries where voice is available.

would you be able to pair a One with a Play:1? I don't think I need to have all speakers to have the microphone, would be nice to mix it up.

Great question, Mugenabe. The Sonos One will only pair with another Sonos One, you won't be able to bond One with a PLAY:1 for either stereo or as part of a surround setup with a PLAY:1.

I'll make sure to pass on to the team that you're interested in seeing this at some point in the future, but there aren't any plans to share at this time that this might happen.

I don't use any stereo pairs, but just something on this.

If you want a stereo pair and your only option is 2 Sonos One speakers, assuming a stereo pair will both be in the same room, when you speak to it for Alexa functionality, which one will respond?

The microphones use beam forming technology to figure out which one you're talking to, that one responds. If you're speaking to the middle of them, one will hear it a little louder and will respond. You can have a lot of fun putting several Alexa devices in the same area and seeing if you can get them to play along, or if sometimes the wrong one picks up.
Hi, I just purchased a Sonos Play:1, is there anyway to exchange it for a One? We don't have the box anymore but obviously want the integration with Alexa.
Does the Sonos One have the same sonic qualities and performance as the play:1?

Definitely not pleased that the One cannot be paired with a play:1. I have paired speakers in most rooms in my house (play:1 or play:3) and would like to have a One but seems like Sonos is introducing a new constellation of speakers that won't be compatible with the 9 Sonos speakers I already own!

The comment elsewhere is that Sonos One and Play 1 will be similar.

I don't think you're looking at incompatible speakers at all though. You simply can't use two different speakers as a stereo pair. Be nice if you could.

Depending on where you purchased the PLAY:1 you may be able to return it. Otherwise, they two will work well together, you just can't stereo pair them as a single room.
Just ordered my Sonos One! Very excited. Thank you for answering all my questions!
When will voice service be available in Canada??? Had 8 in the pre-order cart for xmas presents until I saw not available in Canada yet.

Ryan are there technical differences that would drive that decision? It's surprising to me that it's not currently planned for.

Same here. This was the first question I had when I read the announcement. I have a surround setup in one room and I’m planning another in a new basement. Would prefer to only buy two new speakers instead of all 4.

Bringing a voice assistant to a country has a lot of details that go into the whole deal, I wouldn't want to speak too much to it as I probably don't know it all myself. I think this says it well:

We'd love to have the support available world-wide, so as voice becomes available in your region we'll be jumping to get it up as soon as possible.
Since the controlling system is run by Amazon (Alexa), I don't think Sonos can predict or reveal when a partner will release their software functionality in another country. I suspect that it would create an issue between the two companies if Sonos were to give some date for Amazon's release.
I have existing 1, 3, and 5 already in home. Will this new One work with them?
I have a Play:One and don't want to (and definitely won't) pay AU$299 for a Sonos One just to add voice control (which anyhow is currently inactive in Australia) BUT I would pay $299 for a Sonos One if I could create a stereo pair with my Play:One. Stereo plus voice control is definitely worth $299 - but voice control by itself isn't. I bought my Play:One to listen to music and have no trouble controlling it from my iPhone or from the top buttons. If I buy a Sonos One, my Play:One (which I bought new last year) won't be used anymore since I have no need for 2 mono wi-fi speakers, even if they can play the same mono music simultaneously (which I assume is possible). If stereo pairing isn't possible, please allow us to trade-in our redundant Play:One's which were bought with the understanding that they would continue to get "better over time".
jennygrossner, it will group and play well with all of your existing speakers. It will not stereo pair with any of them, however.

Sonos One will not give you voice control if your country does not have Alexa support. Conversely, your Play:1s will support voice control via any Alexa enabled device just fine as soon as it is available in your country.

Yes, as will any Alexa enabled device. You could use the cheap little Dot to control them now. You just can't stereo pair the One with anything but another One.

You'll be able to use the Sonos One to use Alexa and control what's playing in those rooms. You can also group it just like you can with any of the others.
Really excited to add to my flock of alexa devices

Does the sonos one suppprt all the alexa skills or is it just for music.

Does the sonos one support ESP ie if I have a mix of echo and sonos alexa devices will the nearest device always respond regardless of whether it’s echo or sonos, or can it only tell which is the nearest sonos device?

Can I use the intercom/dropin capability of alexa devices on the sonos one, how will I know if there is a message?

Thx
Why don't you activate and use the microphone in wi-fi connected phones (or tablets) for voice control of the Sonos system? Why are the microphones built into the speakers? My iPhone's microphone is used for Trueplay to calibrate (tune) my Play:One so surely it could also be used for voice control. Since our phones are always with us and can be spoken into directly, there should be no need for a "6 far-field microphone array with advanced beamforming". Keep it simple!
So what does this mean for interaction with an existing Echo or Echo Dot. I recently purchased a PLAY:1 and was informed by Best Buy it had a 3.5 jack, it doesn't. But the sound quality was amazing and everything Sonos was saying was integration was coming, so I kept it. Does the Sonos One kill integration with existing echo devices?

You found your way to the wrong annoucement 🙂 Check out this one. You can use that Dot to control what's playing on your PLAY:1 today.

It'll support most Alexa skills, but the emphasis is music.

Yes.

I don't believe this will be enabled to begin with, it might show up later.
