Changes to volume mapping and impact on Sub output

Thank you for your feedback regarding the recent 14.12 software update with Enhanced Clarity for Arc

In this update, we made a change to Arc’s audio profile to improve dialogue clarity and the overall sound experience. This change is based on feedback from our listeners in the field and brings Arc in line with our other Home Theater products, resulting in a more accurate representation of the sound as intended by the content creator.

The updated tuning adjusts the spectral balance of Arc+Sub to achieve a more accurate representation of the sound and an improved sound experience. While the Arc+Sub output capability remains the same,  the mapping of volume across the 0-100% range has been adjusted with this release which means low and mid volume levels are relatively lower compared to the previous tuning so you may need to adjust the volume slider to achieve your pre-update volume level. The maximum volume and bass output are unchanged. We acknowledge that this change was not made more clear in the release notes and in the future we’ll be sure to make sure we communicate these rare changes more effectively.

Please note, we have identified an issue for some users of Arc, Beam and Ray whose configuration includes a Sub (with or without surrounds), who may find their Sub output is lower than desired after performing a new Trueplay tuning.

Users with Beam or Ray bonded with Sub can increase the Sub level for a more powerful low-end response, however this won’t have the same impact for Arc users. Customers using Arc bonded with a Sub (and/or surrounds) who find their Sub output is lower than desired following performing a new Trueplay tuning, should temporarily disable Trueplay on Arc until this is addressed by an upcoming software update.

Trueplay tunings for Home Theater configurations without a bonded Sub are unaffected, including standalone soundbars and those bonded with surrounds only.

Moderation edit:

With the 14.18 software update, the above mentioned issues have been addressed, and the Enhanced Clarity for Arc adjustments are retained. There was a clear preference within our community for the previous volume settings, and these have been restored. This will be apparent immediately after updating to 14.18. The Trueplay issue has been fixed. Customers who experienced a lower Sub level after performing Trueplay after updating to 14.12 will need to update their systems and then perform a new Trueplay tuning in order to address these improvements in their system. Customers will hear a more powerful low end response, meaning any Sub level adjustments made after 14.12 should no longer be required.

Add me to the list of frustrated users. I have a Beam Gen2 with 2 Sonos One’s as rears and a sub. Since the update, the sub has definitely been neutered. Even with the sub level set way up, the output is incredibly weak compared to pre 14.12.

Ok, I just bought sonos arc and sub gen3. I paid a lot of money thinking I read only great things about sonos. After the agony of installing sonos arc, which took me 2 hours of pain to connect a wi-fi connection, I listened to sonos system for the first time and I had the impression that I was deaf, it was very weak and the bass was non-existent. I hope that sonos will fix what they have ruined and return to the established and praised sound that made me buy the system.

Return it whilst you still can. Be one of the lucky escapees, unlike myself and others sat waiting for a return to how it all acted and sounded in 14.10

I have the following SONOS products: ARC + Generation 3 Sub + 2 SL Ones.  A bought these items when the software was Version 14.10, and I was very happy with the purchase.  Now, that SONOS has changed the software to 14.12 and 14.14, I am very unhappy.  The sound from the ARC is tinny and hollow.   I am no longer listening to the SONOS equipment.  Instead, I am hearing the sound on my LG G1 (great) TV through my $150 Bose Flex Sound Link Wireless Speaker.  My family thinks that I am a fool to have paid over $2,200 for the SONOS system.  I am out of the return period.  Because you still have time to return the SONOS products, my advice is to immediately send it back.  SONOS is now the Yugo of the audio world.  I have written to the President and CEO of SONOS, and they do not have the curtesy to send me a reply.   How fortunate you are to be able to get your money back!

you realize he is the ceo. His job is not to direct software engineers nor is it to employ to every customer that responds to the ceo because simply that is not his job.

Isn’t the job of a ceo the responsibility of the company, which will includes all? Instead of filling his pockets with money from customers who paid a lot of money for their systems, and now seems he doesn’t care about the whole world complaining what his employees did with the 14.12 debacle?

He should take responsibility and send the employees back home and hire some people who know what they are doing, instead of hiring a bunch of idiots who ruined our systems 😡

I bet it has everything to do with the mini-sub. They are just not ready to launch it. What a joke, they should have tested this update before releasing it to the public. They didn’t do their jobs right and here we are, over 6 weeks, and no one from the company is taking the trouble to inform any of us. They should be ashamed by themselves and the CEO is responsible for that. It’s definitely his job to lead his employees to make sure of that. Meanwhile Sonos isn’t responding to any of us with a descent answer.

If we are lucky the software update will release next tuesday or Thursday. If not the 20 would make a lot of sense

The vocals on some 5.1 content from Netflix is not even audible in the arc 😡

Really hoping the next update will fix all issues.

I dont know others like peterpee have said that 20th is likely date because sonos releases update on Tuesdays usually the third or forth week but there is also a chance for next week. Also because sonos probably wants this fixed asap. it is really harming the company image.

Just a mere thought (my Arc is not mounted) but does anyone think they left the 'wall mount EQ' on as default and that's the reason why it sounds worse?

No.. definitely not the reason

In my case, I do have the Arc wall mount (as well as sub and 2x surrounds). The bass was great prior to updating to 14.12, so it isn’t “just” the wall mount EQ that is the reason why it sounds worse. I suppose it might potentially be that the wall mount EQ adjustment in 14.12 is bugged, but my guess is there will be people on this thread who could quickly confirm they are experiencing the sub bass issue and don’t have the wall mount?

The most frustrating thing for me is that Sonos’ advised workaround of disabling trueplay until a fix is released just doesn’t work for me. The bass is still increadibly weak and missing. Turning up the bass EQ or the sub level increases the upper bass but still completely absent of any of the lower bass to my ears.

I can confirm. Last weak I mounted my tv on the wall and also bought and installed the original Sonos wall mount for the arc. Sound did’t change on the sub. Still waiting for the fix, just like everybody else is….

Thats a nice setup

And you aren’t going to hear anything.  Sonos doesn’t pre-announce software releases, simply because they don’t release by date, they release when it is fully tested.

Just created an account to register my disappointment at what 14.12 has done to my sub/system; I spent £900 quid on the Arc to make it sound worse (bought it in July, literally as 14.12 landed having spent months saving up!!).  Ive got 14 days left of my 100 days return policy; I really thought it would get fixed way before this point, but I don't think that it will now.

Even an admission or timescale regarding this would be welcome - and enough for me to keep the faith, and persist beyond the 100 day return.  Even if a fix took another month, or even two, that's fine - but its the lack of information - and communication - which is the saddest part.  As someone who saved up for several months to purchase this ‘flagship’ product, I feel like the company are more interested in profits and future sales than being honest, admitting the issue, and fixing it.

I'm not after a discount on anything, a future freebie, I simply want to listen to my 70s rock music (and the Pineapple Thief - amazing band) the way I hoped it would sound after a long day at work… that's all.  Is it really too much to ask, having spend close to £2,000?  Apparently, it is - but look!  Over there!  A mini sub!  Yes, you can now buy 10 and add them to one system too!  Thanks Sonos, it was fun while it lasted.

I don't think anyone would describe 14.12 as "fully tested", and that was released.
