Can Sonos speakers be safely used outside being exposed to water

No they cannot exposed to water. The Play 1 is "Moisture" resistant meaning it can be deployed in a bathroom or other area where moisture might occur. However, I wouldn't place one in a sauna where condensation may turn into water over a prolonged period of time.
