i am wondering if i can add a sonos sub gen3 to a setup with a sonos sub mini before i buy it.

Although @nik9669a is correct, it depends on the setup you are trying to add the Sonos Sub (Gen 3).

As shown in our Support Article Set Up your Sonos Sub:

Your Sonos home theater setup can connect with up to two Subs. When adding a second Sub, at least one of the Subs must be a Sub (Gen 3).
