LFE vs SUB

If you pair a sub with a play:5 for example, you can clearly hear the play:5 is cut at the frequency the sub starts at, which is how it’s supposed to be. If you’d add a sub to a playbar for a surround setup to watch a movie this should not happen because the sub should be the .1 aka the LFE channel. Which also means the playbar should be full range.

Is this the case? Or is the sub paired to the soundbar to be an extension for the low frequencies?

Interesting in that if it receives a 5.1 signal younwould assume it just plays the .1 and leaves the rest alone. But if received a stereo signal or playing music it should use crossover. I have never tested but you would assume it would have to work that way unles someone was clueless designing.
