I need advice regarding connecting a cd player to my sonos five! What would be my best option to do this? What sort of cd players should I be looking for or avoiding??

Any CD player with RCA audio out or an AUX output will work. If the the CD player has RCA audio out, you will need to get a 3.5 mm stereo mini to RCA audio cable.

It is perfectly legitimate to prefer physical media to computer files. However, Sonos was designed for files not for physical media.

So you should also consider ripping your CDs to disc and forget buying a CD player.
