Hi folks

i’m a sonos amp and sub user for more than 1 year and i think i’m going to leave the community because i realize Sonos is not really aware of what’s going on about music lovers

let’s get an example

sonos app for the sonos amp is the worst app i ever seen .Since their update , we just deal with a 2 eq band ( i remember we had to “beg” sonos to re install the pan left / right  position on the app after the  update)  that is ridiculous in terms of music corrections .i think it’s not a professional  way of working with  music lovers who’ve invested in sonos products.

so i ‘m about to leave and sell  my sonos products and move to a more professional music streaming company, this joke has lasted too long folks.

That’s odd: I don’t recall Sonos ever (during my 7+ years’ ownership) offering more than Bass and Treble adjustment.

Sonos do (according to their web site) spend a lot of time and money balancing the characteristics of the amplifiers, enclosures and sound radiators (“speakers”, if you prefer) to ensure a quality sound.

personally, I auditioned before committing to buying into the Sonos infrastructure. I liked what I heard, and still do.

Prior to that I had a (much more expensive) Linn system which also had very limited tone control, relying on the quality of the components to produce a quality sound. Frankly, I believe that tone controls/equalisers are common on cheap kit to make up for their limitations.

Still: to each their own. I hope you enjoy your replacement gear.

@nik9669a is correct.

There are two different philosophies on this, and inexplicably, both are tenets of  “audiophile” thinking:

  1. Strive for the purest, most transparent sound you can, whether it be via components or room analysis, and serve that up to the listener as is. Witness the boutique brand amplifiers that brag about not even having a tone knob, for example.  aka the “Our ears know best” philosophy.
  2. Let the user transform or modify the sound to their hearts delight, whether by equalizer or DSP, no matter how bad it sounds to anyone else.  aka the “Your ears know best” philosophy.

Sonos has proven to be much more in the former camp than the latter, with minor concessions like the 2 band equalizer aside.

There is a third "audiophile" group that isn't interested in the sound at all, but are buying gear to impress others.

A $750.00 Ethernet cable - audiophile

The $20,000.00 turntable - audiophile

Unless you are one of these audiophiles you need to carefully filter their opinions out of your decision process. Not just due to the prices but because many of their recommendations actually impact sound quality enough you can hear the degradation.

Note that there is a huge gap between folks seeking the best audio quality they can hear and the audiophiles.

Yep.  Music lovers listen to audio.  Audiophiles listen to gear (especially gear that has a big ol’ price tag attached).

I think DSP EQ or room correction ( TruePlay etc ) does less damage than the old fashion analog EQ.  Most high end audio equipment devices have no tone controls.

I don’t have a Sonos Amp so I can’t say much about the EQ implementation there.  I guess for the Amp some form of parametric EQ could be added.
