Unable to install Sonos 2 on Windows 11 machine

Originally had my Play 1 speakers running under Sonos 1 Controller.  Wanted to use my NAS instead of my local drive for storing music.  Existing Windows app doesn’t support SMB2 so I decided to install the latest version (Sonos_90.0-77070.exe).  Said my product (Play 1 speakers) were not compatible yet the website says they are.  Suggested resetting the speakers.  Did that, both are flashing green.  Every time I run the application installer it only offers me connect to existing system or learn how to never create new anything.  Connect to existing results in can’t find any products.  As such, it never actually installs the app.

How do I install my speakers as if I just bought them from the store because right now, I get no such option.  It only offers connect to an existing system, which now, doesn’t exist because I reset the speakers.  Before resetting the speakers, it said no compatible products were found and to install Sonos 1 controller instead.

What’s the deal?

I happen to prefer iOS, but that’s likely because I always have an iPad or iPhone at my side. I do occasionally use the desktop app on my Macs, but recognize they’re going away at some point, at which I’ll probably install the web app. But 99% of my use is via the mobile apps (iOS or Android).

I’m confused. What speakers are you trying to connect?

The controller running on your desktop needs to match the system running on the speakers, certainly, but neither desktop app, either Windows or Mac now has the ability to install factory reset speakers, you must ‘set them up’ using a mobile controller. Once they’re set up, you can then control the system using the ancient desktop controllers, which will soon be retired in favor of the web controllers.

As a reminder, S1 uses SMB v1, but S2 uses SMB v2 or higher.

Here is the Sonos version compatibility for speakers.

Play:1 speakers.

Okay, if the Windows desktop app is the culprit, which app is preferred?  Web or iOS?

“...neither desktop app, either Windows or Mac now has the ability to install factory reset speakers, you must ‘set them up’ using a mobile controller.”

This is the solution.  If any MOD sees this, it would be helpful to add this tidbit on the Windows/Mac app downloads page.

Kudos to Airgetlam!

If your controller device is supported iOS will let you run the full Trueplay after installing.

Android will do the install just fine.

Whichever device you are most comfortable using.

Great that you’ve found a solution.

Two things stand out about your post however

  • You state: “Existing Windows app doesn’t support SMB2”.

The Windows app does not need to support SMB. The Sonos speakers need to fetch the music from you NAS, so they need support SMB. S1 firmware supports SMBv1, S2 firmware doe SMBv2 and SMBv3 (not complete sure about the last one).

  • You state: “As such, it never actually installs the app.”

Installs the app to what? The app is installed on your PC, but cannot be used to set up speakers.

https://support.sonos.com/en/downloads tells you to use the mobile app to set up a new system.
