Power down the new Sonos.

Then fully update your existing system, App and devices.

Once updated and the reboot finishes you can proceede.

Then confirm which system, S1 or S2 your current devices are running, the app has that info under settings.

Power down ALL proceed. Power up the new Sonos. Try connecting with your controller, if it is the S2 controller and is complaining about S1 issues load the S1 controller and try connecting again.

Depending on what you find, the support link (top of the page here) has guidance for sorting any S1/S2 confusion.

The Sonos Connect Gen 1 is only compatible with the S1 app.

So do I downgrade my system to S1?

Additionally I have a connect gen 1 that is S2 compatible...can I use the connect amp gen 1 as a slave amp to the connect gen 1...which is already successfully set up within my total system?

The Connect (Gen 1) and Connect:Amp (Gen 1) are both S1 only. Are you sure your Connect:Amp isn’t Gen 2? If it is and has been upgraded to S2 and you wish to downgrade it, you can. However you need to see if you have any S2 devices that can’t be downgraded, such as the Roam 2.

If you have devices that can’t be downgraded to S1 you will have to run two systems if you want to use them and the S1 devices.

A Connect Gen 1 is not S2 compatible, the Connect Gen 2 is S2 compatible.  If you were to connect the analog line-outs of the Connect Gen 2 to the analog Line-In on the Connect:Amp Gen 1 it would work, but there is a 75 ms delay on the Line-In to buffer the input for steaming.  So it would not be in sync with any other Sonos you wish to group it to.

Downgrade instructions are in the support section here.

Slave? No idea what that is.

The computer programs are not capable of doing much, you need the App and firmware updated to progress.

Thanks Jgatie once again!!!….My Connect 1 is already working in my system (with ethernet) in a room with an amp and passive speakers in my overall system...my main room has my Sonos amp (ethernet connect) with passive speakers...everything works well now….the problem is the current amp with the connect 1 is not efficient, so I replaced it with a connect amp gen 1, as a slave amp, instead of the inefficient one (ohm issues)...can I make this work? Thanks again for your input...much appreciated…!!

As stated, the Line-In on a Connect:Amp have a delay of 75 ms, meaning the audio from the Connect line-outs will not start until the 75 ms buffer fills up.  Played by itself, this is no problem.  If you wish to group the Connect/Connect:Amp combo with other Sonos devices, the audio will he lagging behind the other devices due to the 75 ms delay.

Thanks again….I typically use them separately….do I just connect the amp to the connect gen 1?

If both are Gen 1, just add the Connect:Amp to your system and swap it out for the current amplifier.  You can then use the Connect elsewhere.  No need to slave the Connect:Amp to the Connect unless the Connect:Amp is S1 and the Connect S2.

I’m not sure how this addresses your original title and question:

“Trouble installing Connect Amp Gen1 to my system”

...says not compatible refers me to Sonos S1 controller

...how do I add the Connect amp 1 to my system?...Thanks.!!!

You can’t use the Connect:Amp (Gen 1) until you add it to your system. It is S1 only and will require you to add it to an existing S1 system, or if you don’t have an S1 system yet, create a new S1 system for it.

Kdowling..thanks...question….if I ethernet my sonos amp...and connect gen 1….my system totally recognizes them...in my app both are on ethernet...and life is fine….can I simply add the connect amp 1 as only an amp, with no ethernet….just as an amp…?...thank you.!!

  • May 19, 2026

No, your Connect:Amp (Gen 1) needs to be set up before you can use it. Either ethernet or wifi, but it needs to be set up and added to an S1 system in order to use it.

So it can not be set up in my system? Thanks for responding..

  • May 19, 2026

That really wasn’t what I said. You can have both S1 and S2 systems. I posted a link above to a sonos support article about doing that. You just can’t add a Connect:Amp (Gen 1) to an S2 system, if that is what you are wanting to do.

And once it’s set up, you can have it set to autoplay the line-in coming from the connect and not really need the S1 Controller after that. Maybe for volume though?

I tried to find the link...would U mind re-sending it right here...Thank you very much…!!

What type of OS? Both should be available on the Android or iOS stores, and the Windows/Mac OS are still (for now) available on the Sonos website. As is the ‘web’ link, which is replacing the Windows/Mac versions.

  • May 19, 2026

This is the link I posted above. There are other support articles regarding setting up S1 and S2 systems. But if it was me and I just wanted to replace my existing amp, this might not be the best way to go about it. The Connect:Amp isn’t just an amp and was not really meant for this purpose. Although, you can still do it if you want.
