What are people using for USB C charger for Sonos Move?

Another update about my chargers. After a while I seems to be able to get into chat with Sonos service. Based on the CallID I got from the local reseller, I explained my issues and everything I already tried. They finally gave me some ‘off the record advise’: “Unfortunately i'm not allowed to give you advise about any non-sonos products as a Sonos representative. From a college I understood that he bought a ‘EWENT EW3980’ charger which works with the Sonos move. Purchasing is at you own risk”

In the end I did not order the Ewent charges as I found out that the charger of the Lenovo laptop works as well.

Besides that, I ordered the Nexdock (it's like a screen with keyboard for you phone). This Nexdock is charged by a 45W PD charger. It's from some chinese brand. This charger works also for charging the Sonos, charging my phone, charging my headset and of course the Nexdock. :ok_hand_tone1:

(But I still a bit fustrated that you buy a 400$ speaker. Which do not come with a ‘on the road’ charger, and they do not want to tell you what will work…. )

For the Nexdock charger, they use this one:

I'm thinking of buying the Move and already have a Ravpower Powerbank capable of 60watt USB PD - it sounds like it will likely not charge the Move?

Other Bluetooth speakers tend to output extra power (more volume) when connected to mains power - does the Move do this or does it deliver max power on battery (albeit draining the battery quickly)?

This 87W appear to be working. I tried all the other ones and no luck.

Below are components I use to charge my Move.  1 and 2 via electrical outlet. 2 and 3 outdoors for power boost before the battery drains.

  1. Wall Plug
  2. USB-C Cable
  3. Portable Power Brick

The portable power brick link doesn't work anymore could you please post the name of your power brick?

Finally, it works! Someone earlier recommend a number of power solutions (thank you for sharing), and the one that I can confirm is the Samsung Samsung 45W USB-C Super Fast Charging Wall Charger - White (US Version with Warranty) (EP-TA845XWEGUS). Reasonably priced today at Amazon for $39.64 and that includes the cable. Just plug it in, either starting from an off or an on state, and it really works. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VG9JZVG/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If I were you, Sonos, I’d buy these up and stick your label on them instead of making your community go through such trial and error to find a solution that simply works.

I second this Sonos needs to sell a type c power brick/cord combo for the move. Also an alterative base that can be plugged in with USB type c. Just to stream line things

Sonos forgot to tell Move users about charging without the base!!!: The charger must provide 45 watts through the USB-C… otherwise it will not charge.  This fact is found NOWHERE in Sonos’ instructions, and barely findable in troubleshooting.  I ordered a Samsung 45 watt USB-C charger from Amazon; it charges now.

The support page for this can be found here if anyone else needs a look-see

The Samsung charger works for me, and it looks like they dropped the price today by $10 since I bought it to only $29.95 - https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-USB-C-Super-Charging-Charger/dp/B07VG9JZVG/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Samsung+45W+USB-C+Super+Fast+Charging+Wall+Charger+-+White+%28US+Version+with+Warranty%29+%28EP-TA845XWEGUS%29&qid=1611334240&sr=8-1

Folks just a quick note that may be helpful if like me you find yourself in this thread looking for that ISB C charger solution for your Move.

Both the below are working for me in the UK and charging my Move successfully:

I am using the following Aukey charger:

AUKEY USB C Charger 56.5W 2-Port Fast Charger with Power Delivery 3.0, USB C Wall Charger with Foldable Plug, PD Charger for MacBook Air, iPad Pro, iPhone SE, Google Pixel https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CPLRTSJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_ejGdGb5XGMYK3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I am using the following Anker cable

Anker PowerLine II USB-C to USB-C 2.0 Cable (6ft/1.8m) Durable Charging Cable, USB-IF Certified for Galaxy S8/S8+/S9/S10/Google Pixel/Nexus 6P/Huawei MateBook/MacBook/iPad Pro 2018 &More(Black) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071WNXY1R/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_adGdGbTGYM54D?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Good luck.

I’m having no luck with a 61W MacBook charger. Image attached. I tried the unplugging on both ends suggestion several times.

Also, just a basic electrical question, but why doesn’t a smaller charger still work but just charge the Move more slowly? With other devices, say I charge an iPad with an iPhone charger, or a MacBook Pro with an Air charger, it still charges, just more slowly. Trickle charging. Just curious why that doesn’t work for this device.

I’ve just tested my UK 61W Apple USB-C charger and it works fine charging my Move.  My charger model number is A1718.

I’m wondering how much time you’ve given these charger to work? I’m not sure (and I mean that literally) that Sonos knows/cares what kind of charger is connected, as long as it matches the minimum input voltage and amperage. It might be slower than their own charger, but I’d think electricity is electricity.

Seriously? Let me explain that I tried each and every one of these devices here in this link - and not a single one charges the sonos AT ALL. So i’m afraid your “electricity is electricity” is a little too simplistic here. Clearly Sonos have decided that only “special” electricity is enough - which is exactly the opposite of the point of Power Delivery USB-C charging specs!

I bought the AUKEY Focus 60W PD 3.0 Charger on Amazon for $20. Charges my Move pretty fast. No problems.

I recently bought the Sonos Move and wanted a USB charger for it. After doing a bit of research I bought this charger from a company called 'UGreen' - GaN X 65W and it has 2 PD ports on it. It works perfectly with the speaker. I'd suggest any one who is still looking out for one to go ahead with this one.

Thank you.  That certainly explains the results with the second, smaller charger.  However why does the first charger pictured not work? It would appear to meet the specification.  Or am I missing something?  Thank you.

I don’t know much about that particular charger/adapter - maybe speak to the manufacturer. Is it flextronics/replacement adapter? I can’t seem to find them online via a web search.

The larger of the chargers is for a MacBook Pro.  It appears to be rated at 96 watts, which should be sufficient, should it not?  I tried charging my Move with this charger and the Apple USB-C cable that came with the charger.  I remain puzzled why this combination does not charge the Move.  When I plug it in, the three orange battery status lights intermittently illuminate and extinguish.  I would be grateful for any guidance.  Thank you.

I was able to charge my Move with the unit below (Amazon US).  It charged quickly without issue.  The wire that comes with seems to work well.  I tried to use one of the E-Marker-Chip wires and didn’t get anything to work.  The wire in the box works well for me.

This plug WORKS as of 7/23/2021:

Are you sure it’s not charging the Move battery? The lower amber battery light only shows temporary anyway (the LED does not stay lit whilst the device is charging).

You can check if it’s charging via a web browser goto:

http://[MoveIPAddress]:1400/status/batterystatus

The battery icon in the Sonos app doesn't indicate that the battery is charging.  It does when on the Sonos charging base. As well, while playing, the reported battery capacity diminishes over time, even when connected to this charger.  That does not occur when on the charging base.  I’d like to resolve this, as use of the USB-C charging functionality is important to how I hope to use this product in the future.  Thank you for your assistance.

Ah I see…I was curious as to what the device showed in both the ‘Level’ and the ‘PowerSource’ fields at the URL stated, just as an example:

@MiSkyPig
Just to try to assist you further… I did find these previous threads on a similar topic too that seemed to infer some issues with MacBook Pro chargers and/or their cables FWIW:

In some instances users found changing their cable made a difference.

If you don’t find an answer then it might be best perhaps for you to contact/chat to the Sonos support staff.

FYI, I finally called SONOs today and turns out the charging port is not working on my move. Getting it replaced. I did test the 4 chargers I’ve bought (from recommendations on this site) on a friend’s move and they all work so it was my move the whole time.
