I have a Sonos 3 which is apparently being discontinued! Haven’t had it long!!! My question is.... to use Alexa should I invest in another Sonos or the cheaper option of an Amazon Echo?

The least expensive option would be to buy an Echo Dot. However, Echos and Sonos speakers cannot be grouped together to play the same source, and if that is what you are looking to do, you would need a Sonos One.
But the chance of the PLAY:3 (there is no Sonos 3) not being useful is extremely small. So far, Sonos hasn't deprecated any of the speakers from day one of sales. The only devices that they've obsoleted are non-music playing devices, such as a controller, and an iPod dock. All speakers still work within the Sonos ecosystem.

In fact, I've got a nice pair of PLAY:3s which I listen to daily. And expect to for many, many years to come.

And I have actually done what jgatie suggests. I control them most frequently with an echo dot, using the Alexa skill.
Thankyou for your replies - much appreciated
