2 Fives vs 2 Ones plus a Sub

I’m curious if anyone has ever done a back to back comparison of a pair of Fives vs a pair of Ones plus a Sub, since the combinations are about the same price.  I had a 20% coupon and ordered a Sub on a whim, and I’m really impressed with how much improvement it gives to a pair of Ones.  What surprised me is not just the richer base, but how much fuller the midrange seems on the Ones now that they’ve been relieved of the lower frequencies.

So now I’m wondering if that's not actually a better alternative to the pair of Fives that I was thinking about for the den.  Thoughts?

In my opinion, it’s a tossup. Both sound great. I think there’s a large amount of “what music do you listen to” and “how do your ears work” that play in to it.

As Brucesays.

However the Five can go to very loud levels and fill a big room if not a small house, at times almost too much for a little UK living room and placed horizontal have a wide sound stage.
