i am trying to extend my range do my speakers have to be on same router or can be through extender

As long as the extender is on same subnet and getting all IP Address reservations from the central router then it will work.

If have troubles you could always wire a Sonos unit to your router and thus use Sonosnet (which means each speaker is a repeater and doesn't rely on the home wifi)
