I have 5 play 1's, 2 play 3's, a play 5 and a playbar and sub. Yesterday one play1 and one play 3 just stopped. No light. Tried to reset factory settings, tried new power cords. It seems highly unusual that 2 speakers would just die. Anyone experience this? Could it have been a power surge i wonder??

Probably a surge, a good quality surge suppressor should be used with every Sonos device in my opinion.
With two dead I'd call Sonos and get working on a replacement, they have other contact options but I'd go with the phone for dead gear.
