Sonos starting randomly in middle of the night

Yesterday the Sonos randomly started playing a Spotify song in the middle of the night. It was the last song that was played on my account. We’re currently going to change the Wi-Fi just in case. There’s also no alarms.

But we’d like to know what other steps to take so we don’t wake up in the middle of a pretty loud ghost rave.

We submitted a diagnostics report under the number #290517675.

Thank you!

I’ve never encountered this, but I have seen such issues reported before in this community and quite often it’s the Spotify App at the centre of the ‘night-time’ audio outburst. It rarely seems to be a security breach in most cases. The Spotify App must somehow come to life overnight, perhaps checking for updates and it then starts playing where it left off on connected speakers.

I still think one helpful solution to these things, would be to have an option to "mute all" Sonos devices during a user-set schedule, as it would be useful to set that overnight, or whilst away from the home, on holiday etc.

There are some workarounds to do this with alarms and 3rd-party Apps like Soro, but it would be nice to see a simple ‘reassuring’ (set and forget) feature to do this via the Sonos App.

Of course it would also be helpful if Spotify/Sonos engineers could perhaps get to the root cause of the issue and resolve it for all.

Hi @anamor, welcome to the Sonos Community!

Thanks for providing that diagnostic - I had a quick look and as Ken suspected, it looks like the playback came from the Spotify app on a MacBook. When you connect to a Sonos speaker from the Spotify app, the link can stay active until it’s manually broken - to prevent this from happening in future, I’d recommend closing the Spotify Connect session from the Sonos app - you should have an “End Session" option if you view the queue from the Now Playing screen. Ending the session when you’re finished listening for the night should stop this from happening :)

My Sonos Beam suddenly started playing what sounds like ( at first) some porn movie -LOUD-- I think it might be a childbirth scene in a movie or sound documentary. It’s done it about 4 times in the last 3 months. I can’t identify the track. Same soundtrack every time.

I notice that people have a common thread of Spotify. Don’t use it, never have. Pure Apple Music.

I think blaming this (mostly) on Spotify is a distraction. While Spotify may be the SOUCE of the sudden music, the problem seems to be in the Sonos software. *My Plays never have the problem*, it’s just the Beam. Plays are a few years old, Beam is about a year

Apple TV->TV HDMI, ATV optical out to Sonos supplied Optical/HDMI Audio adapter to Beam HDMI.

Sonos: how can I send you logs?

@Philrelaxing,

It is best to send a diagnostic report within 20-30 minutes of the event and perhaps post it’s reference back here. Here is a link on how to submit the report maybe the next time you encounter the issue:

@Philrelaxing Spotify can do this, but I’ve also read that TV’s do this when self updating at night. That’s probably what’s happening with your Beam. As Ken says, to be sure make a diagnosis when it happens again.
