My sonos 5:1 system works great with music, Netflix ect but when watching regular tv channels on digital tv, freeview, Sky ect the play 1's only produce white noise, even when turning up the surround to settings to full. Why is this? Is there a fix?

Stupid question perhaps, but did you check the audio settings of your Sky box? If you have an optical cable going from your TV into the Sonos, you need to make the Audio set to Digital Out in the settings menu, the one with the spanner.
