I have the sonos app on my phone but can't get my phone to connect to the sonos

You may not have wifi turned on on your phone? The phone has to be connected to the same wifi that your Sonos is connected to. And if you have an iPhone, you may want to turn of "Wifi Assist" by selecting Settings for the phone, then Cellular, and then scrolling down to the bottom. It's feasible that your phone says it's connected to wifi, but it's reaching out over cellular to hit the Sonos system (crazy, I'd agree).
