Reporting a recent software hiccup in audio playback - Slacker Radio

Have had an issue with all of my new-ish black Sonos gen2 amps recently. When playing Slacker radio, songs will end randomly & skip to the next song regularly. One song in particular, it literally skips at the exact same spot every time. As someone that freelances in IT & AV, it seems to be some weird firmware build that has to do with Slacker (Live X Live) specifically. No issues with TuneIn, or Amazon Music. There may be some issue in server communications between Slacker & Sonos. Not certain who would be the root issue, be it Sonos or Slacker. ALSO, when I skip tracks, I will often times get a message that “such & such song could not be played”, & then it skips onto whatever the next suggested stream song would be. Sometimes this can happen for 2-3 tracks. So in the meantime, the room is quiet, & all you keep seeing is these error messages on the controller that it’s skipping tracks because it can’t communicate to the servers.  Have also noticed that skipping track via smartphone AND desktop, only compounds the issue more. Everything is hard wired by Cat6, & the setup has been the same for years, with nothing changing in the physical. My network setup is super on point, since I freelance in IT, so I don’t at all believe this to be a variable. This speaks to me of firmware & sever communication issues & 3rd party app integration hiccups.  

Just thought to report it, because that’s the only way bugs get fixed. Thanks!

No complaints all around about Sonos products as a whole. Love them! Really hope Apple doesn’t acquire Sonos as so many business editorials keep suggesting as a wise market move acquisition possibility. Apple would only end up screwing up Sonos & limiting it immensely, by likely shaving away all 3rd party integrated apps if they belong to a competitor. Apple sucks in the Tim Cook era.

Side note: On this website, when you type anywhere, somehow the build of these Sonos web pages, bypasses the normal built in spell check of Google Chrome. That’s kind of a drag & would think be a simple fix?

I couldn’t help to test this (easily) as a user from the UK, but was just curious if you had tried the 'slacker app’ just to see if that was clear of the ‘dropout’ issues at the time. Might just be a temporary slacker outage, perhaps?

I use the Slacker app direct every day on my smartphone & also tablets. The above described issue has never once when used that way. It’s something to do with being a liaison intermediary device to the original streaming service provider. After reviewing other similar Sonos community forums, I have found that it’s a Sonos issue on & off across the board, no matter the streaming platform. If you look at the last 3-5 years back, in similar forum issues reported, it’s every streaming service. Experiencing the same issues from time to time. 

In fairness to Sonos, it has to be hard not only getting the rights from 3rd party app streaming services to allow integration, but then also continually figuring out what’s suddenly wonky after each software build update from the original each service provider every month. Not just the occasional hiccups that root from Sonos firmware.

Things that were once working great, can get screwed up by the original streaming service changing something about how their servers communicate, and/or permission changes, & then Sonos just has to roll with the punches & try to patch in real time as life moves along. I don’t envy Sonos in regards to how much of a headache this must be. Having to constantly maintain stability between every firmware build on their software end AND deal with server/software changes from the streaming service too, EVERY month. Even when Sonos create patch fixes, it could get mucked up again months later, at no fault of their own. Sonos is at the mercy of all of those streaming service companies, & constantly having to work around the changes that they likely don’t announce to Sonos whatsoever. Likely zero heads up with any of this. 

Hence why the fastest road to fixes is reporting the hiccups.

I have always thought that each in-built Music Service in the Sonos App is created and maintained by each provider themselves. I think Sonos merely provide them with the tools etc. and simply let them know whenever there’s a problem. I’m sure your report will also get passed along, if that is the actual case. 👍
