I have a relatively simple setup, Connect:Amp, Connect and play 1
Both connects are wired through Netgear GS108T's with STP enabled on all ports
When I play the play 1 one of the connects stops if I stop the play 1 the connect comes back on
Can someone suggest a set of fault finding steps

That's unusual. I would submit a diagnostic and post the reference number here. That would get the inside info to the Sonos techs.
This would be good. Try to recreate this and then you can follow the steps are here to submit a diagnostic.
Also, can you just check to make sure that the PLAY:1 and your CONNECT don't have the same IP address?
