For a bluetooth capable speaker that can also be part of a wifi multiroom system to me it does not seem illogical that the set up involves more than if you would have bought “just a bluetooth speaker”. And on the move the extra steps can be performed using two phones. What’s the problem?

Im just gonna leave these here. Trust me “Trying again” doesn’t do any good.

What’s the problem?

The problem is not with the product, but lies within the unwillingness of some to look beyond their first glance at the product.

Your suggestion of it being a Bluetooth speaker first and foremost, is a little like buying a van and never driving it, but just using it for storing things in the back of it.

I didn't suggest anything at all. I answered 106rallye's question, that's all I did.

It's okay, Ken. No harm done.

Send it back and buy a Move imho.

I use both and they each work really well - not had any issues with either device. I just can’t carry the Move too far when hiking. 😀

I normally take two Moves with me when hiking, so it's very frustrating that they can't be Bluetooth paired.

depending on Bluetooth connection status Airplay will or won’t be available.

Airplay is a network protocol and remains available on Roam even when it has a Bluetooth connection, though clearly Roam can’t play from Bluetooth audio and Airplay audio at the same time. Starting one stops the other.

Absolute Crap!!! Read all these reviews and sympathise with everyone who has had problems! So easy for the Sonos muppets to log in and pretend all is ok and try to trip up frustrated legitimate customers who based their allegiance on the other decent Sonos products that can work very well! ….and I’m sure I’ll get another employee telling me I haven’t given enough information and how wonderful it really is for them ….even though they probably haven’t got one or paid the extortionate money that so many have for what can only be described as a pile of useless crap!

lIts the last time I rely on Sonos ….Bose all the way in future!

The Sonos roam is a piece of * that frequently loses connection to network. It gets worse with every app update. One of my roam speakers will not reset no matter how long you press the play pause button. If you like constantly trying to reconnect the speakers to your network or like the ability to not make a stereo pair on Bluetooth then this is the speaker for you, if not look elsewhere!!! By the way, I did not see anything on product packaging about issues with dual band networks, from what I read here and elsewhere packaging should have warning about connection issues with these routers because if it did I never would have purchased!!!

Sonos Product Managers, maybe introduce a Sonos Roam BT (think: SL line, but you take away home network capability and the need to use the Sonos app)? It might help stop the bloodshed on this thread. Plus, you got a strong audience willing to buy from this conversation alone. I'd buy it, even for the same price, because I solely use my Roam when travelling for the sound quality in a compact package. In other words, I wanted "just a bluetooth speaker" and was willing to throw money at you knowing full well I was going to use roughly 2% of what you painstakingly designed it for. In my mind, what's another $200 when I already spent $20k with you furnishing my home with speakers I've been desperately trying to hide behind couches and picture frames so my wife doesn’t see it?

I know what you're thinking, this probably could be done with an optional software update, but f- that, make that money. I'll be ready to checkout when you introduce it. You're welcome.

I’m thinking you’re perhaps not up-to-date with Sonos current features - just enable Bluetooth Always Auto-Connect in the Sonos App, when away from Home, the Roam will always auto connect to the paired nearby BT device. It’s a feature you will find available in the Sonos Room Settings in the current version of the S2 Sonos App. It makes the Roam work, rather like a BT speaker when out and about.

Now you can go buy your Roam.👍

My Roam SL hates this feature. Still takes a manual pair away from home. Concur with the OP it is garbage.

True, but not 100%, at least on iOS. You can switch to Bluetooth whilst connected to Airplay (via the Bluetooth settings menu), but you can’t switch back to Airplay whilst connected to Bluetooth. You first need to disconnect from Bluetooth for the Roam to show up as an Airplay connection option in Airplay. Whilst connected via Bluetooth it shows up in Airplay as a Bluetooth connection option only.

This is the the worst Sonos product out there, and we have 15 total products.

the connection almost never works; it won’t charge, and the music cuts in and out almost every attempt.

don’t buy this piece of crap

My Roam works flawless. I'm guessing you are American. Seems to be Alot of bad and poor networks out there. Just get a better wifi or use Sonosnet.

I have over 40 devices spread across 2 houses. I never understood the purpose of the Roam. A solution in search of a problem. Better bluetooth speakers are available for the price. It doesn't have the greatest reviews either with many people calling it unreliable, charging issues, etc.

My Roam (called Vortex) connects to Bluetooth immediately when away from Home with the Sonos Bluetooth ‘Always Auto Connect’ feature - don’t need to manually do anything - it’s all automatic. Maybe an issue with your chosen paired device, or perhaps it’s user error. I have another Roam and that works in the same way too with the Sonos feature enabled. It simply auto-connects over Bluetooth whether I’m away from Home or at Home. The attached shows it working when I’m away from the Home network and no intervention from me. I just simply power on the Roam.

Sonos roam is the worst product I’ve ever used. Basically a homework assignment to get the thing working. Why do you need to go through the app? why can you not just connect via Bluetooth? my guess/concern is that the app is there so they can sell your data, which is really annoying as I only wanted speaker!!

I realize that this post doesn’t contribute a thing.  For the 20th time in the past year, I decided I would be optimistic today, spend a bit of time fiddling and cajoling my Roam into waking up and doing something.  30 minutes of futility later, for the umpteenth time, it is totally unresponsive. I was curious and thought I’d just search for “Sonos Roam is garbage” found this thread with others feeling the same.  Comfort in not feeling alone.

No, I’m not going to get into the specifics of what, how, and wherefor the Roam reacts or behaves.  It quite simply is a useless device and is now in my dumpster.  I have multiple Moves (love), several deprecated 1st Gen Play 5s, Beam, PlayBar, Ones, etc.  Like others, I am a long-time Sonos believer and have also started to build out a collection in my daughter’s home.  But the Roam is a bad product plain and simple.  The other Sonos products have been as reliable as electricity, and that’s how it’s supposed to be.  The Roam on the other hand - I mean who else has gotten sore fingers trying to hold down that undepressable button on that thing ?  The product line is very impressive, but Roam is the rotten egg.

Hear! Hear! I have two other Sonos products that work well. But the Roam SL is PURE TRASH. 2/5 times it will not connect to my system. What’s more, when I contact tech support it’s ALWAYS the same response. “Hard Reset the entire device” which obliterates all your settings and registration. I love Sonos, but I hate this Roam SL.

It should never have been released in such an utterly broken state.

I cannot stand this piece of junk, and it’s hurt the Sonos brand for all of us that own it.  If it’s not plugged in or on a charger it’s ALWAYS a dead brick

Two years in and loads of updates and they still can’t get it to work half as well as a $50 JBL.

Totally agree I have the Arc and a 1 GBPS connection and it always tells me it can't connect or can't find system it's one of my life worst purchase ever. By the way I'm really good with troubleshooting and have a degree in computer science everything works perfectly at home I have to workstations with custom built PC have my own server workstation but this product is by far the worst 1200$ in the dump nothing less with zero customer service support I even try returning it right after purchased it I had to go through a whole process with Sonos never gave me any option to return or get a exchange or refund and I'm stuck with this crap. Buy something that does both Bluetooth and wi-fi setup not unilateral Wi-Fi that doesn't recognize and good wi-fi connection and just doesn't let you use it at all I'm gonna stop there because it drives me crazy having spent that much money on something that useless

Is it not advertised as a Bluetooth speaker?

Sounds very much like a non-PD-certified charger issue to me, but if the Roam is already in the dumpster, then I guess my reply doesn’t contribute a thing here either.

Similar experience - very unreliable connecting to home Sonos via WiFi; often drops the connection; doesn’t show up in the list of devices on the Sonos app; discharges in standby mode (why not turn off completely after fixed period to save charge?); hold the (inconveniently positioned) button for 5 secs to turn off - why?

Steer clear.  Definitely a “do not buy”.

Just switch on the ‘battery saver’ option in the Sonos App.. I have not seen the Roam here drop it’s WiFi connection, in fact I’ve taken the Roam outside the Home and carried it at least 40 feet away across the garden and it stays connected to my Home WiFi network.

@FinTaxi - I’ve no idea what you’re attempting to show with you’re photo’s in your post above, but it appears you’re trying to connect your mobile device WiFi to the Roam, whereas you need to use the S2 Sonos App to connect your Roam to your local WiFi network instead. Perhaps see this YouTube video for how to setup the Roam:

Is it not advertised as a Bluetooth speaker?

No, it’s advertised as a portable Sonos speaker that also offers Bluetooth.

If anyone took the trouble to read the FAQs on the Roam product page they’d see:

Will Roam work with Bluetooth out of the box?

Like all Sonos speakers, Roam must be set up with the Sonos app whilst on WiFi before you can connect a device directly via Bluetooth.

Not to nitpick, but a portable speaker that also offers Bluetooth would be considered a Bluetooth speaker to the casual consumer.

I like that this is covered in the FAQ, but again to be fair to the casual consumer:  This would not be a Frequently Asked Question, nobody would know that there was a need to ask about the prerequisites for a Bluetooth speaker.  The actual FAQ should be “Why doesn’t Roam work with Bluetooth out of the box?”  Unfortunately most don’t research before picking up something like this.  A Roam could certainly be an impulse buy.  A mistake could easily be made.  I just don’t think that this mistake falls completely on the consumer.

And no, I don’t have a Roam so I have no feeling one way or the other about how it should work.
