I I hooked up my speakers using an ethernet cable but as soon as I unplugged the ethernet cable the speakers wouldn't work. What did I do wrong?

I would guess you need to give Sonos your wifi name and password. Settings -》Advanced Settings -》Wireless Setup.
Even if the WiFi details were in the system the "speakers wouldn't work" for a minute or two while the system reconfigures itself after removal of the Ethernet cable.
