Correct Sonos plays upto 24/48 from your local library.

Edit also from Amazon Music and Qobuz, possibly other streaming sources as well now.

Thanks, that's what I thought... Five plays 24/48 but pair of Play:1s don't - but they are supported on S2... 🤔

Tried factory reset.. Installed one only, then the pair, no joy.

Stumped.

One would assume that the same applies for other sources.

Thanks, that's helpful, couldn't find that anywhere. Assumed as S2 supports 24bit and Play1 is still supported on S2... anyway it was worth a try.

I think with Amazon music that might be a legal/service specific thing. Afaik all S2 players support 48khz for local streaming.

Everything has always supported 48kHz. And always used 24-bit (or more) internally. 

I can’t see why it would be a legal thing with Amazon. Why allow Sub/gen3, but not Sub/gen2? Makes no sense. It just seems that the older players are unable to decode FLAC 24-bit.

It does seem inherently implausible that Amazon would allow 24 bit on specified products. Why would they do so?

The Play:1 and Play:3 have the least memory, and probably the slowest processors, of those devices supported under S2. (They can't do Airplay 2 either.)

Finally, the wording in this blog post seems to me to imply that it is device dependent.

Yes, Five shows up on every controller, (android, iOS, PC et al) as supporting Airplay, but the Play1s are never shown. Heading towards replacing soon I think. 

Reckon there was such a fuss about the S1/S2 original declaration that basically so much would be bricked they looked at the number of Play1s in play (pun intended) and decide tgey could just about keep them alive as a sop to the outrage. 

The PLAY:1s don’t have an AirPlay 2 receiver built in to them, they were designed before AirPlay 2 was a thing. I usually just group my PLAY:1s with a Sonos One, and send the AirPlay 2 signal to that, and it then extends to play on the PLAY:1s. Much as I’d love to replace the PLAY:1s, there’s not really a need, as long as grouping continues to work. 
 

All of my system is S2, though.
