Support ratings

Pretty much all file formats now support ratings within the tags / metadata. These tags allow a user to rate songs, generally on a 1-5 scale. I would like to see Sonos add some features to support song ratings. Here is what I'd like to see:
-Ability to view rating of song currently being played (perhaps 5 light-colored stars somewhere on the display with 3 of them filled-in with a darker color for a song with a ranking of 3).
-Ability to modify song ranking using the Sonos controller when it is being played (similar to the TiVo "Thumbs Up" and "Thumbs Town" feature).
-Ability to sort by song ranking (to play your favorite songs or to play/rank ones that are not rated).
-Ability to have a playlist automatically generated based on rankings and an additional criteria (genre, artist, playlist size, etc.).

I think these features would make it easier to listen to your music collection without searching through it song by song trying to build a specific playlist. I've noticed that many computer software programs now support ratings. I've been playing around with these and really enjoy the effortless song variety it gives.

I also vote for implementing ratings as outlined in this thread. I routinely use ratings in iTunes to find the songs I most want to listen to. I really miss having this feature in Sonos!!!!
This is the one feature, that for me, Sonos is missing.

I would like Sonos' shuffle mode to support an option to be sensitive to the ratings of the songs in the queue. Obviously, this first requires that Sonos at least import iTunes' ratings ;)

What I mean by sensitive would be to play highly rated songs more often. The parameters I see is a minimum rating to be considered "highly rated", a "% percentage of time" to play highly-rated songs, and a time-frame that percentage applies to.

So, I can pick "4-stars", "80%", and 1 hour. And know that over the next hour, 48 minutes will be my favorites, and the other 12 minutes will be songs that I have forgotten about :)

Playing a song now or next would force the queue to possibly be reshuffled to maintain the desired top-rated percentage.

With this functionality, I can simply play my whole collection, and know that most of the time, as I define it, I can hear what I really like, and also hear a bit about what I might like not as much, but not dislike enough to delete.

Second after Alarm Clock functions (which I am so happy to see in version 2 and to see so very well implemented) would be a simple "Rate It" function. If I have a big queue and am listening in shuffle play mode, I frequently encounter tracks in my collection that I wish were not and/or tracks I forgot I had that I would like to hear more often. In either event, it would be great if I could pick up the controller and hit a "Rate It" button and scroll through ratings to save in the track meta-data for use elsewhere.

For example:

*****
****
***
**
*
Do not play ever again.

And of course I'd like to be able to have automatic playlists of "favorites" e.g. tracks rated with 4 or 5 stars. And the ability to configure shuffle to play unrated music at random, highly rated music slightly more often and poorly rated music less often:

Positive bias for:
*****
****

Neutral bias for:
***
no rating

Negative bias for:
**
*

But, of course, I would want to control this behavior by simply turning it on or off according to my whim.

Thanks for listening and kind regards,

Aaron Kirsten

There are so many *OLD* requests for more sophisticated favorites handling - please implement this.

Thanks very much

am a long time ipod user, a lastfm fan and have recently migrated from soundbridge to sonos. I love my Sonos and use it exclusively to play music at home... usually in 3 rooms at the same time. Love it!

The inability to mark favourites (and bans) from the controller is very frustrating. I often make broad musical selections as I like to be surprised and find tracks I forgot I had.

At the moment, when I hear a song I like, I scribble down on a piece of paper in order to mark it on my PC later. That just doesn't fit with the beauty of the sonos system!

Creating playlists from favourites is already there, although a bit awkard, by doing so in itunes first, but for marking I am limited to pen and paper.

Even if you offered a simle way to 'mark' a track, so in the evening you have a list of tracks that need to be banned/rated or have their tags fixed etc, this would help a lot.

Thanks! Charlie

Hi all,

Just wanted to add my support to this feature... the one and only feature I think Sonos is missing at this point!!!

Sonos - PLEASE implement read and write of rating tags via the controller, including playlist creation which is based on ratings!

I would like to see the feature that you can use the rating number as a grade.
Like I want to hear every song that I said is worth a 4 or higher (on a scale of 1-5). So not just the 4s but also the 5s.

Add me to the list requesting this. More sophisticated playlist management and generation seems to be an increasing theme in this part of the forum at the moment!

I agree - this is a basic feature which should have been implemented a long time ago.

I am also missing the possibility to search by album year - it would be greatly appreciated!!

As this thread is more than 4 years old by now one could be a bit worried whether these requests will be fulfilled by the Sonos guys?!??

Not to downplay this or other similar requests (please keep them coming so Sonos knows how many people want them) I do want to remind everyone that currently there is ONE thing mainly keeping a couple popular requests from happening. Sonos does NOT write to your system PERIOD. to rate songs would require you telling a sonos controller to store a value in the song file you were playing. I personally have no problem with this (and I am guessing many of you agree) but there are plenty of reasons as I understand it as to why Sonos has decided NOT to write to the system. Until that underlying fact is changed, these types of requests just cannot be done.

I agree that sonos should not be writing to the library but should be easy enough to implement in the index structure and have it update when you library updates.. a plug in for iTunes would rock to so the ratings would sync back and forth..

a very popular and very old request!

anyway: +1 for rating from the controller.
And for those who don't want that Sonos write into the files, a additional option to turn this function off.

It is necessary to go with the time (and the customer wishes) to protect a fanstastic product on the market ;)

It would be helpful if someone from Sonos write this into a thread.

There are so many good ideas in this forum, I wish that the Sonos stuff will comment the requests with a short status like "thinking about it", "comes in the future", or "can/will not be done".

As much as some would like, it's plain to see that Sonos does not ever, and probably will not ever, publish a road map for future development. It's probably best to just accept this and move on. I know I have.

A roadmap and a short feedback to suggestions are very different 😉

Splitting hairs with semantical arguments will only frustrate you. Call it anything you want to call it, Sonos never states anything about current or future development. Period. Personally, I've accepted this fact and have moved on.
although you do have to say, announcing a product a bit earlier than its actually available (the new S5) is a step in the right direction. though... i think its STILL not available to buy...

I would love a feature like this...
Especially if the interface of the desktop controller could be upgraded also!:)

Me too for the ratings!!!

..plus it would be great to assing ratings to the Album and Artist as well via the controller.

I would love the ability to (at minimum) have the Sonos system *READ* the 5-star rating system (metatag set via any other application) for the song, and would love for you to also *WRITE* that one tag as well. Allows me to on-the-fly-while-listening-via-the-Sonos rate that song.

I would love this... When I'm listening to a track I love I will rate it 5. I can then create a playlist with all my 5 rated tracks (all the tracks I love).

Nice and simple and very effective!

+1: Enable disable read-only mode / write mode
+1: Rating 0-5* from controller
+1: Dynamic playlists based on any meta tags
+1: Storing changes within the actual music files
- 1: Having multiple users do personal ratings
- 1: having proprietary meta tag formats

Overall: BIG BIG +1

+1 of course. on my wish list since I started the controller the first time. I actually searched the manual/forum wondering: how do I rate my music? how do I add this song to a playlist ? and was confused as to why it was not possible.

It's 'nice' to not write to shares but I'm sure whoever is concerned about this is actually not updating the metadata by hands... so there is always a chance to mess up your library. That's why we invented backup. I have a mirrored NAS + external backup, it cost me $600 but counting the time I spent on this, it's worth it.

Now if Sonos wants to keep the secure mentality, fine... then sell a new model with an SSD in it that keep tracks of the rating/usage info. One should suffice to enable the feature and make sure to get an import/export from the desktop controller just in case it needs replacement.
in general, i like the idea you propose of having a separate place to keep track of "changes" made BY the sonos system. Whether its an actual sonos box or whether its a text file stored in a location on whatever shares you have indexed or whatever, I don't much care. I do think having a proprietary way of storing these things will run afoul of the same people who hate how iTunes stores things so oddly...but it certainly would keep Sonos from actually changing any of the music files themselves...which I believe is one of the main reasons they are so anti-write.
