ABC stations poor quality stream

Hi,

I have recently started experiencing poor quality audio from ABC stations.
More specifically i listen to Triple J, but am having problems with most (maybe all) ABC stations.

Since about a week ago (16 dec 2015) this started.
I've contacted SONOS, TUNEIN and ABC.
I believe the stream i was listening to will be turned off in early 2016.
On their web page ABC have a few links to direct streams but the quality does not seem to be any better.
SONOS also provided a few different direct streams but no good.
TUNEin have no control of the stream they receive so they were of no help.

To give you an idea of the quality, i have to turn up the sonos controller to about 3/4 volume and not crisp at all. When i change it to another source that volume is way too loud for normal listening. Am playing through a stereo pair of play 5's (gen2) living area and 3 play 1's in other rooms.

I was wondering if others are experiencing this problem (they should be if its a stream issue) and if there is a work around?

Very frustrating as its the most listened station at my place.

Yep, I'm having the exact same problem and only started about a week ago. Affects all ABC stream stations, but Triple J is the only one I care about. Frustrating like a mofo! Any ideas?
Yep same issues - triple j has decreased in sound quality dramatically - probably started about 2 weeks ago or so? I have a friend with a similar set-up to mine and they are experience the exact same issue.

Oh good, I thought it was just me. The same thing here. Possibly more than two weeks ago, could have been as long as 3-4 weeks ago when it started - can't remember exactly.

I've gone to tunein.com in my web browser to try to play triple j and it seems fine there - it is just the one via the Sonos app.

Fantastic - thanks so much!
We've also been experiencing poor quality on ABC-Sydney. What we've noticed over the past 3-4 weeks is the sound levels fluctuating quite wildly, particularly when there are listeners/guests who have phoned in and are on air. The presenter would come through loud, and the 'phone-ins' would be extremely quiet (or vice versa). I assume this is due to some mixing problem or lack of level setting at the source of the signal (assume this is ABC?). I never considered it might be a problem with the TuneIn application...but guess it could be.
Anyhow, I have read the recent append, and now have used the explicit URL settings for both TripleJ and ABC Sydney, and added these to Sonos Favourites.
One down-side is that the icon in the Sonos Favourites list now no longer instantly recognisable. Whereas previously we could easily spot the logo of the radio station, e.g. the ABC logo or the TripleJ logo, we now have generic music notes instead. It would be a nice touch to be able to replace these with something more meaningful...
We'll try this 'direct streaming' for a few weeks and see if its any better than the TuneIn offering.

For anyone interested in doing the same, the URL's for ABC Sydney are as follows:

http://www.abc.net.au/res/streaming/audio/mp3/local_sydney.pls
http://www.abc.net.au/res/streaming/audio/aac/local_sydney.pls
Thank you so much for providing these workaround links, it has been driving me mad! I work from home and need triple j for my sanity when I don't know what I feel like listening to. I never heard anything back from ABC when I tried contacting them either.
Although its only been a few days since I started using the direct links, the quality is noticeably better.
However, there is a downside that is at least as irritating as the original quality problem.
The stream stops quite frequently, i.e. radio just cuts out for a short period but may be up to 10 seconds.
I did read on the ABC site that the AAC stream can only support a limited number of users, not sure if this also applies to the MP3 stream, but probably does, so I suspect this is the cause of the interruptions.
I have NBN fibre in my home and get consistently high bandwidth for my general internet access, so this is unlikely to be a problem with my connectivity, more likely a problem at source (ABC?).
If anyone else has other ideas on what is causing this, and more importantly, how to fix it, I'd love to hear from them.
Otherwise, guess I'll be looking for another source for my ABC and TripleJ 😞
Delete Triple J from your favourites. The just do a search for Triple J in the Radio by TuneIN tab. The new link will be there. Happy Australia Day!!!!!

I fail to see how this fixes the problem with the TuneIn poor quality? All you have done is revert back to TuneIn, which is the source of the original problem.

Thanks to the Hottest 100 yesterday I finally got around to fixing this. I thought I'd try Smocox's suggestion first (as I don't have the desktop controller installed and hadn't got around to it. No success with re-adding the station from TuneIn.

I then tried Storzz's solution (after installing the controller!) which worked perfectly! Thanks Storzz!

Of course new Sonos users who search for triple j (or any ABC radio station) are going to be disappointed in the quality, so this is still something Sonos should be communicating with TuneIn to fix.

Custom URL stations can only be added through the Sonos controller for PC and Mac. It's not possible to add a custom URL station through the iOS and Android apps.
Hey all FYI you can get all the stations in better quality.

Mate, I joined up to the Sonos community purely to say thank you...this issue has been giving me the sh*ts for years and I am now FINALLY listening to the J's in decent sound quality...the other link I had in Favourites has been removed forever. Happy days 🙂
I have 6 Sonos components, but JJJ sounds so crappy through them that my wife uses our single EU Boom instead. It feels wrong.
Thanks for the work around, but like someone said - it doesn’t work if you use an iPhone as the controller.

I have been using these alternate quality streams for sometime now with no issues. As of yesterday the triplej streams seem to have not working for me, but, the good news is the default Tunein stream seems much better - started off low quality, but after a few mins it seems to have optimised and sounds good now... will see how we go...

Oh, you're a legend. I was trying to get a HQ version of Double J, and the obvious URL didn't work. This is gold.
Joy- just cracked a fix for JJJ on SONOS iPhone app. Delete the ‘Tunein’ JJJ - it’s crap. Go to ‘More’, ‘Add Music Services’, scroll a long way down to ‘myTuner Radio’ and add it. Select JJJ and add as favourite. Go back to the main screen and ‘my SONOS’. Select the new JJJ and feel the joy of beautiful sound.

Is there a link to connect to Perth JJJ, I've connected to the Sydney link and it seems to sound a bit better, but it would be nice to get a link for our time zone... We only recently have been given the option of a Perth link thru TuneIn but it sounds like it's coming thru a can
