I recently purchased a play bar and 2 play 1 speakers. Can they, the play bar and speakers, connect to produce a surround sound experience or do I need to purchase a subwoofer and/or play 3 speakers?

Yes, they can be set up as a 5.0 system. Then, when funds become available, you could add a Sonos SUB to make it a full 5.1 system. I operated in this manner for a year or two, and it was outstanding. Adding the SUB took it way over the top, but it was great without it.
