Question

playbar remote use with samsung qn75q80raf

I have the Samsung q80 75-in TV. I just bought the Sonos playbar. I'm trying to set up the remote for the play bar and it's not working. I see that it doesn't use RF with the Samsung remote. everywhere says I have to use an RF extender except there isn't one for this TV and I can't find anywhere that it confirms whether or not this TV has IR on it. How can I use my Samsung q80 remote for the play bar. It's also very frustrating that I can't just buy a very basic audio remote for Sonos. I just want to control the volume and that's it and having to use my phone for everything is very frustrating. If I have to buy a beam so that I can use HDMI Arc or voice control then what is the point of the play bar with modern TVs.

See if this link below, to switch your samsung one remote to a universal remote, may assist…

Thanks but that only works if you're connected to device by HDMI. The play bar uses optical.

The Playbar’s volume/mute etc; will respond to absolutely any infrared remote. Do you not have a cable box, or other peripheral, connected to the TV and use that remote instead, which you would need to setup in the Playbar’s 'Room’ Settings?

Yes that's correct but the remote that comes with the q80 TV does not use infrared. if you use HDMI Arc then the TV will control the sound on the play bar through the remote. Without HDMI Arc there's no way to get the television remote for the Samsung TV to interact with the play bar because it does not have IR

thank you but that article requires the connect box and the connect box is not compatible with newer versions of the q80 TVs

The optical port output volume is fixed the same as a line level output. The device it is outputting to (the playbar)  is responsible for amplifying the audio and regulating that amplification in order to control the volume. So any remote that is infrared will work and the Samsung One remote like an LG magic remote can be setup as a universal remote. In the case of the LG magic remote it will universally control lots of devices, including those that are controlled by infrared… I would assume the Samsung universal remote would do the same thing?? ..If not, then you just need to get hold of any infrared remote with volume control.

Hoping to avoid having to buy another remote because then in order to control the Samsung TV smart functions it will have to be a smart remote since the tv doesn't have IR. And that means an expensive universal remote which seems like a waste

I did come across this link too,,

Without an infrared remote, you won’t be able to adjust the playbar volume easily, other than via the App. Maybe speak to Samsung Support  to see if there is an option to switch your TV and it’s remote to use infrared instead.
