LG C9 and Sonos Arc

Hey all, my Arc was delivered this morning and I've had a chance to hook it up to my LG C9 directly via eARC and ran a few tests regarding Atmos and other features.

Built in apps:

  • Netflix - Reporting Dolby Atmos (DD+) for Atmos content.

  • Disney+ - Reporting Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 (though this is likely due to the current throttling taking place in the EU)

  • Amazon Prime - Reporting Dolby Atmos (DD+) for Atmos content.

Xbox One:

  • HDMI Audio set to Bitstream out and Bistream Format set to Dolby Atmos has no delay, finally! Displays Dolby Atmos in Sonos app.

PS4:

  • Like with the Xbox, there's no delay on Bitstream HDMI audio

NVidia Shield Pro:

  • Netflix - Reporting Dolby Atmos (DD+) for Atmos content.

  • Amazon Prime - Reporting Dolby Atmos (DD+) for Atmos content.

  • Disney+ - Reporting Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 (though this is likely due to the current throttling taking place in the EU). After connecting up to a US VPN it's reporting Dolby Atmos (DD+) for Atmos content.

  • PLEX - This is where it gets slightly annoying. Playing TrueHD content it reports Stereo 2.0. Setting Passthrough to HDMI reports Dolby Atmos (TrueHD). For DTS content you need to switch the Passthrough setting to Optical which in turn causes TrueHD to playback in Dolby Digital Plus 5.1.

Apple TV:

  • iTunes Content - Reports Dolby Atmos for Atmos content. Non Atmos content reports Stereo 2.0. With Change Format > On and New Format > Dolby Digital 5.1, I receive Dolby Digital 5.1 from non-Atmos iTunes content. I ran this test using Beetlejuice and Avengers Assemble.

  • Netflix - Reports Dolby Atmos for Atmos content.

  • Amazon Prime - Reports Dolby Atmos for Atmos content.

  • Disney+ - Reporting Stereo 2.0 for all content bizarrely. Setting audio output on the Apple TV to Dolby 5.1 allows all content to playback in 5.1 rather than stereo.

My C9 is running firmware 04.80.03 with the following settings:

Sound Out

HDMI ARC selected

Digital Sound Out set to Passthrough

eARC set to ON

Additional Settings

DTV Audio Setting set to Auto

HDMI Input Audio Format set to Bitstream.

New firmware for LG C9 is out 5.00.03.

could anyone please kindly check if it can output DD 5.1 from Apple TV/switch etc to the Arc? I returned my Arc, so can’t sadly check it:(

I can’t see this firmware version here in Germany.

It’s not available on the website, but if you go to your settings > General > about this tv and click Check update it should see it.

I would love to know if this fixes the issue. Been holding on upgrading my tv ever since I got the arc.

For future reference: did you change any settings in Kodi to change the transcoding of DTS from DD to PCM/LPCM?

I have a Sonos Arc, a Sonos Sub Gen. 2 and two Symfonisk Lamps.

 

Firmware versions

  • Nvidia Shield AndroidTV: 8.2.1
  • LG OLED C9: 05.00.03
  • Sonos Arc: 12.2.1
  • Kodi 18.9

Settings LG OLED C9

All Settings - Sound - Sound Out- HDMI ARC:

  • Digital Sound Out: Pass Through
  • eARC: On

Settings Nvidia Shield TV Android

Settings - Device Preferences - Display & Sound - Advanced sound settings:

  • Dolby audio processing: enabled
  • Select formats: Auto

Settings Kodi

System Settings: Expert

Dolby movies (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos) work with both of the follwoing described variants:

a) With the following settings your DTS movies get transcoded to Dolby Digital:

System Settings: Audio:

  • Number of channels: 2.0
  • Allow passthrough: enabled
    * Dolby Digital (AC3) capable receiver: enabled
  • Enable Dolby Digital (AC3) Transcoding: enabled
  • Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC3) capable receiver: enabled
  • DTS capable receiver: disabled
  • TrueHD capable receiver: enabled
  • DTS-HD capable receiver: enabled

You have to configure “Number of channels: 2.0” regardless of your setup. This is a Kodi workaround to get the transcoding option. You don’t see this option if you configure something else. 5.1 works this way.

b) With the following settings you get LPCM for your DTS movies:

System Settings: Audio:

  • Number of channels: 5.1
  • Allow passthrough: enabled
  • Enable Dolby Digital (AC3) Transcoding: enabled
  • Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC3) capable receiver: enabled
  • DTS capable receiver: disabled
  • TrueHD capable receiver: enabled
  • DTS-HD capable receiver: enabled

Hi all, I’m having an issue that I haven’t seen discussed in this thread. Basically my C9 always defaults to internal speakers & Optical audio every time I switch on or change source. It’s really annoying because I have to manually go into the C9’s settings and choose ARC. Every time.

 

I had a similar issue when I first got my CX. Found the fix was easy... I had an optical cable plugged into the CX that I wasn’t actually needed/used. Unplugged it, then all was fine after that. Seems like the CX can detect an optical cable is plugged in and will then default to it (even though the other end of my optical wasn’t connected to anything). I know it’s 7 months since you wrote that, but if you still living with it hopefully that solves it for you.

I have just purchased an LG CX, 

when using the integrated apps the Sonos app is reporting Dolby Atmos (DD+) -  It is my understanding this is lossy?

When using Apple TV 4K apps the Sonos reports Dolby Atmos - Is this total lossless Atmos and should be the preferred choice?
