Sorry all for extending this thread.

Is the Samsung UE49MU7000 compatible with a Playbase?

I had a "live chat" to Samsung who have confusingly told me that the TV Optical Output is Dolby Digital Plus only, but separately in the same conversation that it is "normal" sound whatever that might be! They also tell me the Optical Output plays ".m4a, .mpa, .aac, .flac, .ogg, .wma, .wav, .mid, .midi, .ape, .aif, .aiff, m4a". I think either they, or me are missing the point; it could be me!

I have also had a Live Chat with Sonos, who say if it is Dolby Digital Plus, the Playbase would be silent, so useless. I have also spoken to another Sonos specialist who have told me the Playbase would deal with the Dolby Digital Plus signal and interpret it as best it could, so the Playbase would still work.

Which is it?

If that TV is not compatible with a Playbase, is there a work around? Which comparable (size, cost, quality) TVs would be compatible?

Thank you in advance for helping out this confused newbie!

To answer my own question, it seems to work absolutely fine. Not sure exactly what format is being output, but it sounds great!

That TV will work for sure - go into the Samsung settings and select PCM - Dolby Digital - as above, use the Sonos phone app to check (it should say Dolby Digital 5.1" for the sound input if it's working correctly. I'm got another Samsung model (but from the same year but higher end model) and it works fine and I know pretty much any Samsung TV manufactured from 2016 onwards will work fine.

You can check the format by going in to the controller app, select settings, and then look at "about my Sonos system". Each speaker you have will have a section, look under the PLAYBASE one for the line saying "Audio In". That will tell you what the PLAYBASE thinks it is getting.

Enjoy!

Thanks - good tip!

What can my future Sonos system do?
Hi all!
I am planing to purchase a Playbase and only one play 1. I will hook the Playbase to a Sony TV with 5.1 passthrough.

1. When watching TV (stereo signal), How do I group the speakers so the sound from TV also can be heard from Play 1? My goal is to hear the TV without cranking the volume up.
Thanks

Hi Neven, you can use the Sonos app to group two players together as a temporary group any time. This will play the same audio in both rooms. On the app, just press the "Rooms" button on the tab and select the grouping button to set up a group.

Also, if you press and hold on the Play/Pause button on a speaker, it'll automatically group and start playing with the most recently active player. So if you start playing to the Playbase, and press and hold on the button on the Play:1, it'll group and play.

If this is true it may bring DTS support to Sonos for those that have asking for it. But then again it may be too little too late for those that are now wanting Dolby Atmos :?

Stupid question maybe - but. Do I need to consider the same 5.1 pass thru issues when selecting a TV to use with the new Beam Soundbar?

I think not, if you connect it via HDMI. If you connect via optical, yes

Correct. Over HDMI, Beam will handshake with the TV and request Dolby Digital 5.1. If the TV has Atmos or Dolby Digital Plus, it'll get converted automatically and passed right along.

Hi everyone, I've updated this thread to include Beam.
Would there be any issues with the following set-up.

Optoma Projector with HDMI ARC into Sonos Beam. Second HDMI port on projector into Sky box/Fire TV box. I have 2 Play1's for Surround. Any reasons why this wouldn't work just like a similar set-up on TV? Only difference would be HDMI cables would be slightly longer?

As long as the projector is passing audio to the Beam over HDMI-ARC it should be perfectly fine. Beam does have CEC commands for things like "Turn the TV off" which aren't likely to work on the projector unless it happens to support CEC (which is unlikely), but otherwise it should work exactly the same.
I’ve just purchased A 55 inch Panasonic FZ802B and can safely say it passes through Dolby Digital 5.1 to my Playbar from both my Apple TV and Sky Q.

You can also turn the TV speakers off but it does pop up a message when you adjust the Playbar volume with the remote. I believe there are ways around this but I’ve yet to explore.

Hope this helps anyone looking for a new TV ?
Sony 2018 A8F. My Bravia OLED XBR65A8F passes DD 5.1 nicely to my Sonos surrounds. Running latest firmware with Dolby Vision capability. Sounds fantastic. No sync issues with 5.1 content. I am not using the TV's apps for content.

Optical from TV to Playbar with two Play 3s and a Sub. I can rattle the windows for sure.

Input devices to the TV via HDMI: 1) Roku Ultra with DD transcoding on (2016 model that has DD transcoding, New 2017 model does not!). Ethernet connection between Roku and internet source. 2) Samsung Blu Ray BD H6500 (DD transcoding turned on). Bought this years ago based on Sonos community forum posts. It has worked very well. HD content upscaling looking so fine, I don't know when I'll get around to buying a 4k BR.

Side note. I also run a Tablo TV OTA and play this through its Roku App via WiFi. Soon, Tablo is issuing a firmware update to support 5.1. We'll see how that goes. I really don't care about it though. Some current programs have a barely discernible audio lag with my Tablo-Wireless-Roku setup. Not enough affected content, or enough of a lag when it occurs, to bother me though.
Can anyone confirm if the latest 4k BluRay SONY UBP-X700 or UBP-X800B can covert DTS to Dolby 5.1 on the fly..?
Samsung Q6F Series QN65Q6FNAF. 65 Inch QLED. Hooked up to Sonos Playbar via TOS Link, with no issues. Able to get Dolby Digital 5.1 out from Direct TV 4600 Receiver. TV is great, and was using the TOS link splitter and HDMI splitter solution with 2 extra remotes. The Samsung comes with the Samsung One remote and I was able to use that remote to control the volume on the Sonos Play Bar. I followed the directions on the forum, but basically you hit HOME on the Samsung One remote, scroll left to SOURCE, then scroll right to UNIVERSAL REMOTE, select NEW DEVICE, enter SONOS in the search bar and then select Sonos. Coincidentally the Samsung One remote will also control my Direct TV receiver.

The Samsung One remote is pretty good. I've got it controlling xfinity, xbox, and a firetv as well as Sonos without issue. My only complaint would be the lack of a numeric keyboard and too few buttons overall. It takes some getting used to.
Hi,
Sonos user for a long time, I recently bought a Beam, and I'm looking for a cheap blu ray player capable to transcode "everything" to AC3.
i've seen the recommanded List but I'm looking for a second hand player, and I'll not have much choices, or budget (75€ max)

I looked at a "compatible" samsung player user guide, and saw that the wanted feature is the "Bitstream (Re-encoded Dolby Digital) " choice under audio settings.

Will all samsung player with this setting be fully compliant to transcode at least DTS and DTS-HD to AC3 to HDMI output (I'll use an HDMI audio extractor as my 2014 Samsung TV don't have 5.1 passthrough through HDMI) ?
Or the behaviour can depends on the model ?

If I have to buy a new one, I'll give a try to the BD-J5500. Any confirmation about is compatibility ?

Thanks
