Hmm, so I’ve updated but it’s not working for me. I’m using an LG B9, which I understand has DTS

support. But when I play DTS discs, I’m getting ‘Unsupported TV audio’ on the app and no sound.

I am able to play back Dolby DTS-HD and I am hearing all channels correctly, the Sonos App shows the source as Multichannel PCM 5.1.

I tried swapping settings on the TV from passthrough to auto to pcm, only passthrough works properly.

I have an LG OLED C9.

For the audio source I am using a bluray disc.”

Thanks - yeah, still no luck, mine’s set to pass through.

I have a horrible feeling this is down to the blu ray player I have, the dreaded Panasonic UB820.

Does anyone have this setup and can confirm DTS is finally working?

Oh No!  Yes that is the problem. As I commented above, I have the same Panasonic UB820 and it doesn’t play well with Sonos for my DTS only blu-rays. I had to buy a second player just to play DTS only blu-rays in multichannel PCM on the Sonos Arc.

Drat. Was really hoping this update would get around that somehow.

So is my only option either a new player or an HDFury?

Unfortunately, from what I have spent far too much time out of my life googling and experimenting, options are limited to another player or something like the HDFury. The Sony player I bought cost a little less than the HDFury and I could have returned it for free if it didn't work out. Others use the Sony PlayStation too.

Huge PITA that I wish I would have known about before buying all these components.

What player have you got, as you be able to convert it to multichannel pcm.

Yes. I ended up buying a second Blu-ray player ( Sony X700/M) that does pass-through LCPM through the LG CX TV to the Sonos Arc. This is an excellent work-around.

My first blu-ray player purchase til this day, even after Sonos ARC firmware updates supporting LCPM and now DTS, the Panasonic DP-UB820, will not pass DTS or LCPM through the LG CX to the Sonos ARC.

@LBJ2, looks like we have been dealing with the same frustration that comes along with the Arc 5.1/CX/UB820 set up. I have been going back and forth regarding whether to get the Arcana to try and fix the issue for DTS blu rays. Like you did, I figured it would be much cheaper and easier to simply get another blu ray player to use as a workaround instead of the Arcana. I picked up the Sony UBP x700/M the other day. However, I’m still getting Stereo PCM in my Sonos app for DTS discs. I’ve tried several combinations of settings on both the x700 and my TV. Would you mind sharing your settings for the x700 and your TV so I can see what I might be doing wrong? I would very much appreciate any insight!

I got to say I’ve given up on getting dts to work on my Xbox series x, Reading through these forums I’m amazed what hoops people needed to do to get Dts work, so I’m going to pull out my old blu ray player connect to my switch and hope for the best.

Just a few settings to change should get you there. This is how I have it set up.

  1. Everything going through eARC on the CX TV
  2. Make sure your Sonos, TV and Player have the latest firmware
  3. Set the CX TV Sound/Additional Settings/Digital Sound Out to “Passthrough”
  4. The Sony player Audio Settings/Digital Audio Output can be set to  “Auto”
  • Initially I set the Sony player Digital Audio Output to PCM but since some firmware updates seems “Auto” brings multichannel PCM 7.1 too.
  • If I leave the CX TV set to passthrough I can also hear Dolby Atmos Blu-rays from the Panasonic player which I have in HDMI 3 and multichannel PCM 7.1 from DTS Blu-rays through the Sony player in HDMI port 4

Thank you so much! I'm getting multichannel PCM 7.1 with those settings (kept it on auto on the x700 for now). You made my weekend! The bizarre thing is that I definitely tried those settings before, made sure the new blu ray player had updated software, and made sure the Sonos system was updated. Since I have my tv set to auto update, I didn't check it. After your message, I looked in my tv settings and auto update was still on. However, there was a note that said the tv had been updated and the install would occur with the next restart. Restarted the tv and install complete. So either this update occurred at an extremely coincidental time, or there is an issue with the auto update that required me to trigger it by opening the setting. Nevertheless, I'm super relieved not to see the dreaded "Stereo PCM" on my Sonos app.

Woot Woot 🤩

Multichannel PCM 7.1 is like a breath of fresh air when that sound stage suddenly opens up across your room after suffering from PCM stereo. I know that feeling well. Enjoy!

Have just discovered this thread whilst trying to test DTS through my setup. I have the (dreaded) UB820 player and a Panasonic HX940 series TV. My Sonos setup in the room is a Playbar and Sub.

After much huffing and puffing and panicking about the performance of the Blu-ray player (after reading this thread!), I eventually deduced that the TV was my weak link. It would happily passthrough Dolby 5.1 (audio out from player via HDMI and then from TV to Playbar via optical) but DTS was showing as PCM Stereo in the Sonos app.

Did some digging around and found that the TV doesn’t support DTS. So I tested running the optical cable direct from the UB820 to the Playbar and it worked flawlessly.

Now I just need to order a second optical cable and remember to switch them over in the back of the Playbar when playing physical media. As much as I might like to use this as an excuse for a new TV, I don’t think it will fly...

You probably can get an optical switch as a good compromise.

👍🏻

I want to try the optical cable too with the UB820 to Sonos Arc to bypass my TV for direct DTS from the UB820 to the ARC.

What settings did you change in the UB820 to split audio to optical ? Also does your TV support eARC?

P.S. If you do spring for a new TV ( good time of year to do it with all these sales), my own lessons learned--make sure it supports all forms of DTS and DD. The newer Sony TVs seems to support both from the little I've investigated since I stumbled upon this DTS-less brouhaha after I made all my purchases.

Does anyone know (or have this same problem) why I can only get DTS if I turn off ‘eARC’ on the LG B9?

Surely this is a bug? Seems a bit weird that DTS comes up as unsupported audio when eARC is on, but appears all fine (and in 5.1) when it’s off.

It’s not the end of the world (much prefer this to no DTS support at all), but it’s a bit annoying having to keep switching it on/off every time I play DTS content.

This link may help explain it for you…

I’m not sure whether I misread that post you linked to, but my TV is the B9 so supports DTS passthrough and eARC.

So it should be playing DTS without me needing to turn eARC off.

Hi I'm wondering if someone can help me understand how this DTS support will work. I'm really new when it comes to all this audio talk and I don't really understand it. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

I have an LG C8 TV which is connected via arc to the sonos beam and I have 2 one SL speakers for surround sound.

I watch a lot of movies and I download the movies then copy them to an external HDD that I then connect to my TV.

Before I download a movie I always had to make sure it had DD5.1 because I knew my beam supported that codec but with this DTS update will I be able to download DTS hd master audio films and have my TV convert the audio to a DTS codec that my beam will support or will the TV not do that ?

I'm just really confused as to what DTS codec the beam is going to support and what the passthrough thing means on the TV. I don't even know if my TV even does a passthrough.

Hi, yes your C8 does passthrough and yes it supports DTS as a codec. You can enable the passthrough option in the audio menu on the TV. DTS is basically like Dolby Digital 5.1 for reference and the one Sonos will be supporting. DTS:HD is like the equivalent of 7.1 and DTS:X is like equivalent of Dolby Atmos although both those two won't be supported, but should get mixed down to standard DTS or multichannel PCM.

Thank you for the reply, very helpful.

I am very happy my Sonos ARC 5.1 setup now processes Multichannel PCM 5.1. A huge sound difference compared to the previous Stereo PCM only when playing any DTS Blu-ray formats ( even though it displays as Multichannel PCM 7.1 on the Sonos app)

Not sure what happened in the industry where I guess Sonos thought DTS was on its way out and didn't include support for DTS in their ARC system till very recently?. From my vantage point, it seems many of the new 4K Blu-ray conversion disks I buy are coming with DTS and not Dolby Atmos!

Unfortunately, I had to buy a second 4K/UHD Blu-ray player to hear Multichannel PCM 5.1 through my TV the LG OLED CX to the Sonos ARC. For some reason, Sonos Arc and the expensive Panasonic DP-UB20 Blu-ray player can't pass/process  Multichannel PCM through the LG CX TV when playing all these new 4K movies that come with DTS. This combination only allows Stereo PCM with a a barely audible fake surround sound coming from the rear speakers. I mean you really have to put your ear to one of the back speakers to hear a slight fake surround sound. So if you own Sonos ARC and looking for a new 4K UHD Blu-ray player, the Panasonic DP-UB20 might not be the best choice if you want to hear Surround Sound on all your DTS blu-rays/4K blu-ray's.

When I bought and played the same Blu-rays with DTS only through the budget Sony UBPX700 UHD Blu-ray player with the LG CX TV and Sonos ARC, the room filled with true 5.1 surround sound with DTS processing as Multichannel PCM 5.1. Wow what a difference compared to the miserable and muffled PCM Stereo signal!

Now I wonder what will happen to Multichannel PCM 5.1 when Sonos Arc comes with support for DTS? If I understand correctly Multichannel PCM 5.1 is a better quality sound than base DTS? Will Sonos allow for processing both? Maybe Multichannel PCM 5.1 through the PCM audio setting on the Blu-ray player and DTS through setting the audio to  bitstream on the Blu-ray player?

@LBJ2 The Panasonic UB820 works great. It just doesn’t work with LG TVs to play multichannel PCM. I use a UB820 with my old Panasonic plasma and the HDFury Arcana and it works great with DTS discs.

From my understanding, the CX doesn’t support DTS passthrough. So you won’t be able to get DTS Digital Surround from UHD discs either unless you use a device like the Arcana. Stick with multichannel PCM. The Arc will still support it and it is a much higher quality audio format.

Blu-Ray Player to Sonos Arc

LG C9 TV set to ‘pass-through’

Blu-Ray Player to Sonos Arc?

Hi Ken, which Blu-ray player ? Also what configuration on your LG C9 allows you to connect your Blu-ray player directly to the Sonos Arc and then view the movie on the TV?

I am sure Ken can answer for himself when he comes back on, but I don’t think he is suggesting a direct connection from BRP to Arc, just that he can now get DTS audio from his BRP playing on the Arc by passing it through the TV

I had a slight hope he had figured something out to bypass the TV without the complications of something like the HDFury, which might solve the Panasonic UB820 DTS to ARC issue blocked by my TV.

As an update to my post further up, I have the UB820 and am now getting DTS 5.1 for my DTS Blu Rays.

The only downside is it required me to toggle eARC off for the Arc, but it’s easy to toggle it on/off, and actually having it off still gave me Atmos and the like.

I can talk through my settings if helpful?

Interesting! Please explain. My LG CX still doesn't support DTS, but I’ll give it a try anyway.

Thank you for the reminder. I have read to the frustration of many all over the internet, the LG CX does not support DTS passthrough and no hint of update or fix on the horizon for the LG CX. You are right this IS the answer to my question regarding when Sonos ARC supports DTS and my LG CX TV + Bluray Player. Thankfully as I wrote, I am able to hear multichannel PCM 5.1 with the Sony player through my setup.

While the Panasonic UB820 is indeed a reference player, UHD, Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos is excellent, however for some reason lacks the hand-shake ability in my set up to process Multichannel PCM 5.1 through the LG CX to the Sonos ARC via eARC. So just a precautionary note for those considering which UHD Bluray player for the LG CX + Sonos ARC and DTS only Bluray discs which seem to be the majority. Something I wish I would have known before I bought these particular components.

For now with one going through one HDMI port on the LG CX and one through another TV HDMI port both through eArc to the Sonos Arc:

-When I play a 4K UHD w/ Dolby Atmos/Dolby Digital, I use the Panasonic UB820

-When I play a 4K UHD w/ any flavor of DTS only I use the Sony UBPX700 for multichannel PCM which turns out to be much better than I expected for full Surround Sound.

The above setup through the gorgeous LG CX 65” is pretty much plug and play as configured above.

P.S. After too much research, I decided against ordering the HDFury Arcana from Asia, but am aware this could have solved my issue as well. In the end, the UBPX700 was a same day buy and deliver option with Amazon plus easy refund if my little experiment didn't work out.

It's great news it's better than nothing, considering that Bose announced their atmos soundbar with no DTS at all...
