Can anyone confirm if the sony KD55XD8005BU passes 5.1 dolby digital from connected hdmi sources through optical cable and into playbar.

Carlyboy, I just posted in your other topic... All of the Samsung 2016 (K) models can pass through Dolby Digital if the sound settings are set correctly. They will only pass through DD though with those settings... anything else (i.e. DTS) would be converted to PCM.
I don't believe the Samsung's pass through. My old JU6740 didn't.

Looking at samsung UE55KS7000 can this pass through 5.1 from hdmi to optical?

Yes it does.
The KD55XD8599 is a better spec than the XD80 and is a similar price (possibly cheaper) and also passes through 5.1DD. Might be worth looking at that?
