Hi Everyone

We moderators of the community - @Corry P@Jamie A & @Sotiris C. - wanted to take an opportunity to explain some of what is currently happening on the community.

First of all, we value all the feedback you are providing about the new Sonos App. We hear you. Feedback is coming in fast and thick, however - for understandable reasons - and to be frank, we are having trouble just keeping up with it all. For this reason, some topics that have not yet been replied to will go unanswered. We will, however, do our best to amalgamate some of these separate threads into bigger, related threads (such as one big thread for Alarm complaints and another for Queue Management) to be answered en-mass. The threads that are feedback on other aspects of the new app will be merged with this post.

Threads that describe issues such as missing rooms and app crashes (those that are not just feedback, in other words) will be answered, as will threads not relating to the new app in anyway, but these will take a bit longer than normal.

Please be aware that we are reading every post, we are recording and collating all feedback, and all of it will be passed over to the app software development team. In addition, we are doing our best to identify previously unidentified issues and report them to our technical teams.

We know many of you are concerned about certain features going missing, so let us take this opportunity to say that the following features are coming back:

  • Alarms management
  • Sleep timers
  • Queue management
  • Playlist editing

In addition and contrary to some speculation, local Music Library is not going anywhere, though SMBv1 support has been permanently removed. Local Music Library searching is something that is still being worked on.

We’d also like to thank everyone who has taken it upon themselves to help others here with their questions and concerns - we appreciate you all!

Thanks for listening - take care of yourselves, and each other.

@Sherlock31, You're welcome! A queue cannot be saved as Sonos playlist.

https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/create-or-edit-a-sonos-playlist

Is this true in the new App?  Really, you can't save a queue as a Sonos Playlist?  That's pretty fundamental functionality isn't it? Has it gone (even ‘temporarily’)?

(apologies if I've misunderstood the point as queues and playlist terms are often used interchangeably here)

Yes, you are supposing correctly. New S2 mobile apps (iOS and Android) have no option to save the current queue as a Sonos playlist.
At the moment you will need Sonos desktop controller to do so. Not sure, if Sonos has plans to bring back the feature or if there may exist technical problems of doing it.

Thanks.  I had thought that had returned in the last update for Playlist etc.

This is the ‘Save’ option being referred to @AjTrek1 …

@sjw, That’s the previous S2 mobile app, recognizable by the navigation bar.

Yes, I understand that - it’s the version I have so I’m unaffected by all of the issues over the last (almost) year.  I thought the function had returned in the last update that seemed to focus on queue/playlist functionality restoration - so it seems I still have a while to wait to get parity on what I currently have.

The image is in response to the “What’s your point and where is a “save” button needed?” question.

So did I, like some kind of sick April Fools joke this key part was omitted.

How can an app have no Save button?

Excuse me...according to your profile you’ve been a Sonos user since 2015 well; before the App refresh. Now you make a vague statement regarding a “Save Button” 🤷. What’s your point and where is a “save” button needed? 🤔

I have been asking for this feature for months now. The original app had this feature. I use the IOS app and when I add a song to a playlist, there is no way to edit or save a song into that playlist. The only way I can accomplish this is by going up to my Windows PC and editing the playlist that way. I don’t think this is “vague” as you so stated. Try and save Playlist on your iPhone or iPad if you use the IOS app. You can’t. The Save button used to be at the bottom of the current Playlist window. And as I mentioned at least 100 times in the past, every time I scroll down and find a song about 100 tracks down my list, the minute I hit the Playlist button (bottom left) in the Now Playing window, it loses your place and takes you right back up to the top. And you have to search and scroll down all over again to see what song is going to play next. It is very frustrating, and these are things the old app used to do. All my music is stored on my local NAS drive and either ripped from my CD collection or purchased on iTunes. I don't subscribe to remote music services.

This window looks familiar. Like the older app. My IOS app looks nothing like this. What is this?

@John Guarr, This is the previous app that predated the May 2024 app.

I haven't updated so still enjoy all the previous, once taken for granted, functionality...

Thank you for clearing that up. I was just getting ready to reply and ask that question. So you never performed the updates. See, I have been doing all the firmware and app updates as they come along ever since I lost all my music back last May. I upgraded my NAS drive to support the newer protocol and managed to get my music back. I keep reading about user’s problems with speaker dropping, but I don’t have any problems. I just don’t like the new app with all the swiping of windows just to change the volume. It’s just poorly designed, but I don’t think that is ever going to change.

You have to excuse me since I have a hard time following who’s saying what on this post. I am sitting at my computer with severe double vision and am having a hard time typing. I check every morning for firmware updates and updates to the IOS app. I’m lucky enough to have three iPads and keep one in each room and I don’t touch the setup since because every time I try to change a room or a music source, it messes everything up and I can’t get things back. The new app isn’t as user friendly as the older app.  I really don’t use my iPhone for Sonos music playback even though I have the app installed. So, I’m always on my iPad, or now, my Windows computer.

Actually, this morning I upgraded both firmware and the IOS app to no avail.

To be honest I‘m not a heavy Sonos playlist user… but just speaking for myself I‘m quite satisfied with the possibility to add, delete and sort songs via Sonos mobile app. I just add them from my music services and manage the Sonos playlists from within Sonos app. Maybe it’s ok for me, because Deezer is my primary service and they also don’t support an option to save a queue as a playlist.
But as it was an available option in old s2 app, I can understand people are missing this.

Yeah you might be a teeny tiny bit apoplectic if you often used the feature in the Deezer app for 10 years and Deezer deleted this feature in an app update with no notice, promised they would bring it back for a year, announced it was coming back then inexplicably don’t.

Probably you would have changed services though, something not so easy to do here with Sonos.

Since you “cherry picked” the portion of @Schlumpf  response…maybe next time…don’t. He indicated that he understood why people are missing the feature. I guess you just had to manufacture something to be critical of hoping others may not catch your selective editing.

@GilbertGrapes

Indeed like @AjTrek1 mentioned and understood me correctly I just wanted to point out that there can be different views on the situation.
I really understand that someone is missing the add queue to playlist feature he used before for years.
But on the other side there may be users like me who are happy with the feature like it is and can do what they want regarding to Sonos playlists.
So why don’t just talk about both sides of the story and accept each others opinion!?

Yes, there can be different views of the situation but I'm not sure if there was any of that going on in the quite blunt “Now you make a vague statement regarding a “Save Button” 🤷. What’s your point and where is a “save” button needed? 🤔” comment.   Where it's needed is probably where it's been for a decade plus.

Some observations on recent discussions...

Latest releases - I took latest firmware and Android updates yesterday and it is now much better at  handling local music playlists. I can now:

* Play them (yep many would not play)

* Play playlists >100 entries long

* Replace queue reliably

* Add to end of queue reliably

* Back button actually now steps back through selection route

* Can edit reliably - delete, add to end, play now and reorder (by drag or random option)

Together with far better and reliable (🤞) responsiveness in general across playlist handling.

Still no save rolled out to me yet (UK) and position in queue is not held but hopefully that will come…

None of the above functionality worked for me with local playlists until this update and all of which were issues for me. From my PoV a very positive advance has been made (and with no changes to my network #notmynetwork 😉).

With regard to flac files - I exclusively play uncompressed flac files, effectively straight CD iso copies without issue. However I do have a pretty robust network and I do not use SonosNet. But...

With regard to Play:1 speakers dropping out - I have found that running these on a 2.4 GHz network is problematic with both local and web streaming. Forcing them on to my 5GHz network has solved the issue. It would appear that something makes them more sensitive to network speeds (less memory to cache the stream?). Other products do not appear affected by WiFi network type.

Oh, can also direct edit a playlist but can't 'save as' and I can see ALL my playlists now, previously there seemed to be a limit as many were not showing...

And now available - add to playlist -> new playlist but for a single track by the looks of it... Nearly, nearly nailed it 😋

Seems functionality is incrementally appearing as this did not seem to be available earlier...

I’ve been a loyal SONOS customer for a long time but this new app is awful. Do the developers even use it?

It frustrates me every time I open it. My most frequent use case is the following:

TV sound coming out of the Soundbar as I go outside with my Roam speaker to start the grill (and enjoy an adult beverage). I turn on my Roam and open the app. It shows TV playing on the Soundbar and nearly every time I end up screwing something up trying to start music on the Roam and keep the TV audio on the Soundbar.

It isn’t intuitive AT ALL.

Frustratingly over engineered nonsense.

No one asked for this update and yet it was forced on us… unfinished.

Keep it simple.

@spencers.atl

Selecting a speaker (room) from the Sonos App home page is not as difficult as you might think or have experienced.  Here’s how it’s done in 4 easy steps without stopping the activity in another room.

In Image # 1 below you see that the room “TV” is in the “Now Playing” box at the bottom circled in Red. At the top you see the “Drop Down” arrow  circled in Yellow. Taping the arrow will reveal all my rooms as you’ll see in Image #2

Image #1

Image #2

In this image I’m going to select the room “Fireplace” circled in Yellow.

Image #3

In this Image you see that “Fireplace” is in the “Now Playing” box circled in Red; but has no active content. I’ll next select Apple Music circled in Yellow as a source.

Image #4

As you can see Fireplace is now the active room in the “Now Playing” box.

Image #5

In this slide you can see by the activity bars circled in Yellow; both rooms (Fireplace and TV) are active!

Manufacturer changes are inevitable for hardware, software and applications. Sonos has made changes to its App before prior to the May 2024 release. The major difference (IMO) was that those changes were gradual verses all at once. However, even those changes required a slight learning curve.

The vast majority of people don’t like change. Granted what may seem easy and/or straightforward to some may not be the same for others. Hopefully, Sonos has learned that implementing sweeping changes all at once is most likely not the best course of action.

I hope this information helped and that you can go back to enjoying your Sonos!

I have two main issues with the Sonos app:

  1. Can’t get an Alarm to work, it does turn on, but always playing default music theme (Chimes) and nothing else. I used to play ‘My Supermix’ or some radio station here, I can’t do that now, so I don’t use it as an alarm anymore. It’s too bad, it’s an important feature for me.

  2. Tried to save Queued music into a playlist today and I couldn’t. I was baffled that this is impossible and to create a playlist from the Queue I had to manually add each queued item into a new playlist! Unacceptable, please fix it by simple addition of a ‘Save to playlist’ button!

Hi AjTrek1,

that actually worked - thank you! Seems my problem was Sonos App not being logged into TuneIn music service. This is fixed now, thank you. I still mis the ‘My Supermix’ option in alarms.

And of course, issue 2) is still unresolved by Sonos App developers, I hope they tackle it in the near future.
