I interface with Sonos either through Win 7 or the Sonos Controller 200. I do not own and don't plan on purchasing a smartphone or an iAnything.

According to the About panel, I'm using Version 6.4.

Apparently the Sonos version numbers are the same for every platform which means some updates won't (or shouldn't) affect me at all. I've had an "Update Now" entry in my "Select a Music Source" list for quite some time, but I'm reluctant to invoke it because I don't know what it's going to do. I could not find on the Sonos site a list of changes made in each version.

My question: What, if anything, am I missing by not updating?

It is going to depend on how much you like the interface. The new 8.x version of interface is completely different. I wasn't much a fan of the 6.4 version but many loved it.

All release notes are here (you can click and see all versions) https://www.sonos.com/en-us/software/release/8-3

You can see the new app details and video here https://www.sonos.com/en-us/controller-app

Its going to be a personal preference as to update or not. Biggest thing recently has been Amazon Alexa voice control.

Personally - I actually believe the 8.3 version now is one of the best we have had.
