Can't connect on Windows 10 with Sonos Controller

Hello,

I’m unable to connect to my Symfonisk using the Sonos controller app (61.1.82310) on Windows 10 (64-bit, version 20H2), even though all is working fine from Android.

The Symfonisk is connected to the wireless network.

The PC is connected to the same router via ethernet cable.

Both devices obtained a DHCP IP address in the same class C network (192.168.255.x)

I’ve been searching the forums and checked all possible issues I could find:

  • the PC ethernet connection is using the Private profile
  • Windows firewall rules for Sonos are in place (the controller s/w did that)
  • I can ping the Symfonisk from the PC
  • I can see the Sonos Support Info page on the browser on the PC (http://192.168.255.21:1400/support/review)
  • I’ve disabled the firewall and the AV (Windows Defender), the problem remains

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @rommium.

Thanks for reaching out and welcome to the community!

Let me see what I can do to help you.

To better understand what’s going on with the computer, kindly submit a diagnostic report through the Sonos app using the controller in question, and reply with the confirmation number. I'd start by reviewing your system,  it will help in identifying what's possibly causing the issue.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

HI @Annazel S

Do you mean submit a diagnostic from the Sonos Windows controller?

I’m not able to do it. as the app always starts in setup mode, the only option available is the “Connect to existing system” buttton, which fails.

I’ve submited from the Android app instead: Number 1349228424.

Cheers,

Hi @Annazel S, any news?

Hi guys, any help, please?

I have a pretty standard domestic net, with Windows 10 computers connected to the router by ethernet or wireless.

I'm sure this runs without any problem on most windows PCs, what's different on my installation?

I've found the log files under C:\ProgramData\SonosV2,_Inc\runtime, does this helps?

(the external <Document> tag is mine, to be able to pretty print it)

While you wait for Sonos to reply, did you try to uninstall the controller, then download and install again?

Good tip @ClausN , reinstalled (now is v61.1.83220) but the problem persists, I can ping, access the http diag page, etc, but no connection to the device.

Did you also try a refresh of your system?

Power off Sonos speaker(s) and PC, restart router and wait until the router is up running again, then power up Sonos and PC.

If that does not work, hopefully some other forum member or Sonos can come up with a better suggestion.

The log file is a bit weird, it implies you are using one of the Wizards, but most Wizards were removed long ago from the desktop controller, when the ability to setup or add hardware was torn out. There are also references to a legacy system, you sure your Sonos devices are not still on S1? You would need to use the Sonos S1 app if so. (Same major app version as your working Android system).

Also: 192.168.255.x is a highly unusual subnet for a home router.

Hi @controlav , thanks for the post.

I think I’m running an S2 device:

The S1 windows controller available on Sonos site is v57.4.83220 (it didn’t work), on the image above it says clearly v60 or better is required.

And yes, you've spotted it, the 192.168.255.x is my choice for the home net, not the router’s default, just an easy way to avoid collisions with my employer’s bazillion corporate nets when the vpn is on (covid-19 life...).

I’ve went so far as to install good old Wireshark and watch the controller's SSDP/UPnP discovery requests, all remaining unanswered:

Well, as the Sonos guys are in radio silence, I think I’ve got myself a new home improvement project for my confined days: to find out why my supposedly plain vanilla home network dosn’t like Sonos Windows software - or is it the other way around :-) ?

Cheers.

Have you tried my Windows app (see profile)? If that doesn’t work you can send me a diagnostic and I can take a look at that.

Hi @controlav ,

I’ve installed it, can't find the player also

How can I get to the diag file?

Should I sent it to your support e-mail address?

Cheers,

If you hit the Help button, it will send me an email allowing me to look at the diagnostics.

For the record, I’ve found what the issue was.

The problem was with my VPN client (Check Point Endpoint Security).

This VPN client includes an embedded firewall that sits in tandem with Windows native firewall.

I knew that.

What I didn’t realize was that it stays active even when the VPN client is not running. It sits there, blocking whatever inbound traffic it doesn’t like, even when the VPN client is shutdown.

So the only option is uninstall.

After I did that, voilá, the controller immediately found my devices.

Not happy with myself, I should have known better.

Interesting, usually VPNs show up in the network diagnostics, but there was no sign of it in yours.

Check Point states that it uses stealth technology.

It seems to hide itself pretty well from diagnostics running inside the host, so this is more than marketing sound bites.
