Customer suggested adding the ability to bond a SUB with 2 different Sonos devices.


Now I’m considering ditching Sonos altogether.

I was designing out my ideal setup for an open main floor living space that is used for both TV/Movie viewing and for playing music on the whole floor. Ideally, I could share the sub between the two “room” configurations:

  1. TV/Movies: Playbar + Sub
  2. Music: Play:5 + Sub

The main floor is not nearly large enough to justify 2 subs (price notwithstanding!) so it’s frustrating this can’t be configured.

Now I’m considering ditching Sonos altogether.

Also I'm not that sure it would impact sub sales that much, I highly doubt that a lot people warrant the purchase of a extra sub to circumvent this (it's not cheap you know) but I do think it will hold a lot of people back from buying a sub in the first placeMaybe, but I don't know the marketing data to support or disprove that theory.





Aso it would be nice to bond a sub to more than one player/pair I gues, so for example 4 one's can benefit from the frequency cut off and then added clarity the sub offers..
I'd personally like to see Sonos add 4 Sonos Ones/Sonos One SLs as a new room configuration. That way you can add a single sub if you wish and properly Trueplay tune the setup. I don't know the dev work required to get this correct though, nor have any idea of the volume of customers who would want such a setup. I said I'd like to see it, but I honestly wouldn't use it. All my large rooms have TVs and thus have an HT setup instead.

I was just thinking that the solution might even be simpler, why not let the user set the cut off frequency in the sound settings manually?



Lets say I have 4 one's across my main level (two areas, but fysicly one room) and add a sub.

Te sub is added pair-1 where for the frequency cut-off is automatically set, and for pair-2, which will always be grouped with pair-1, I set the cut off manually....

I would like to share a sub between a Sonos Beam 5.1 room and Sonos Connect system that is outputting fixed via coaxial digital to a proper / traditional hi fi system.

Notwithstanding the desire to link a Sub with two rooms (which I very much doubt it's in Sonos' interest to pursue), you can't actually bond Sub with a Connect at all, even within a single 'room'. The reasoning is that the Connect has no control over the final sound experience -- volume, EQ, etc. -- as that depends on the downstream equipment.
I'd like to add my request fio this feature too, with one slight complication.

Both of these systems are in the same room but allow me to have a high end stereo music system as well as an easy to place 5.1 system.

Like: The subwoofer should work together with room a.

And if there is audio in room b without audio in room a it should provide Bass for room b.

I have a Beam under my TV and my desk is sitting in the side room which is not closed by any door. Both rooms could benefit from the sub.
I’m jumping on this bandwagon as well, although it doesn’t appear likely that it will ever come into fruition...
Understand your perspective, but I'd imagine the reason that they haven't done that is due to some sort of market information that they have. Or perhaps there's a software limitation, who knows.
The Sub is a bit pricey, however I could justify the cost of one sub to my customers if it could serve 2 areas, versus zero sub's. . I don't have any data on this, but I think they would sell more subs if you allowed this feature.
I wouldn't expect one soon, unfortunately. This kind of request is quite old, and so far, they've not acted on it. Plus it would probably impact their sales of the SUB.
I’d also like the same sub to eighter play 2.1 music content or 5.1 theater content. I think the solution would be for a front stereo pair of speakers (Play 5, 3, 1, or Ones) to be bonded to the home theater setup, and the allow for a “2.1 music mode” where just the front stereo speakers and Sub play (with the option of music playing out of the other speakers as well). I wouldn’t mind if the bonded front speakers did nothing while in home theater mode, but it would be a bonus if they did. Having a 2.1 and 5.1 setup in the same physical room that shares one Sub is what matters to me. Please?!

This sub is FANTASTIC! But us open floor plan/concept folks really need to be able to pair it with other "rooms"/ speakers.
Ah, gotcha. Yea, I think that the marketing/sales group has a lot of input into what the development team works on. At the end of the day, Sonos lives on making hardware sales, there's no income stream from the software support, so the emphasis would naturally be on what would attract new users.

All of which got the ability to play voice controlled music, and every software update that Sonos has released is applied to all their hardware, with the only exception that I'm aware of at this point being the CR100.



Well, maybe I choosed the wrong words, what I mean is, that there are a few wishes that circulate in the forums that are more or less ignored by Sonos. As you also mentioned - it's a lot about voice control at the moment.
Well, I imagine sales and marketing wouldn't be very happy with a change lke that, it would probably drop sales of the SUB by 30%, as a guess.

But I'm afraid Sonos is only busy with new cooperations regarding voice control and so on 😞 No more significant improvements of the good old hardware.
Only getting into Sonos world, got 5 and 3x1s... was thinking about getting SUB, but if this is not possible, then I will probably pass ... was hoping to switch SUB easily from set to set. damn.... disappoint a bit 😞
Something tells me that this is something Sonos just can't do. This idea has been pushed for a long time. Sonos won't even respond to it. When it gets down to that, it's basically a software issue that the company can't figure out. That's my best guess.
C'mon, Sonos. How about it? Lots of demand here. I think you'd sell more Subs...



I also have a 5.1 setup (with Play:1s as the surrounds) plus a pair of Play:5s in one big room. Would be wonderful to share the sub between them depending on what I was doing.

NJRonbo - Agree completely, seems like it should not be that difficult to do. I certainly would not buy two subs if our rooms were further apart. Cheers.
I am glad that works for you. That is the easiest solution.



However, it's disturbing that Sonos can't figure out how allow the sub to work more freely through their software client. The optimal fix would be to have a simple checkbox that activates the sub with any room selected. I am not sure why Sonos tech have not been more active in pursuing something their customers have been asking for.
