Does the Trade up Program still brick old components?

I’m looking to purchase a Sonos Port to replace my old Connect. I’d read that because of the heat of bricking old components Sonos had allowed people to upgrade with the 30% discount and keep the old equipment.

Have a use for the old Connect in an other room, so hoping not to create more E-Waste, even if it will lose support in May.

The website still seems to state it will be useless after the 21 days?

Hi @d.mo

The short answer to your question is “NO” :relaxed:

Click the link for the Terms and Conditions (T&C) of the CURRENT Trade-up Program. By scrolling down you’ll see that the T&C’s of the OLD Trade-up Program (wherein a Sonos product was rendered unusable) ended at 12:00 PST on March 10, 2020.

Cheers!

Nice one AJ,

Finally found a story from a couple of days ago covering it. Looks like you just have to get in touch with Customer services!

Hello.

I’m unsure about this.  I’ve seen a couple of sites that say something different, but this could be ‘alternative facts’.

See:

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2020/03/sonos-backtracks-on-bricking-your-trade-ins-will-allow-reuse/

or

or

I’m sure we would all welcome the definite answer...

@User933635, read the FAQ @AjTrek1 has provided a link to…

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Visit https://www.sonos.com/tradeup to learn about the program.
  2. Sign into your Sonos account (“Your Account”) on http://www.sonos.com.
  3. View the products registered to your account in the System tab. Qualifying Products that are eligible for the Trade Up Upgrade Program will be clearly marked under Your Account. Navigate to the Trade Up tab within Your Account, and follow the instruction steps for each Qualifying Product. You will be directed to accept these terms & conditions in order to receive your Discount Credit.
  4. Your Discount Credit will be reflected and available for use anytime you are logged into the “My Account” section of sonos.com.

I’d say that the above is definitely a definite answer.

That link still says that the products will be placed in recycle mode and will stop working after 21 days. Where is the link to the current (new) T&C?

Maybe this link, you have to sign in to the store (not just the forums) to get to some of the links there, this may be one of them.

I've been away for a week so didn't notice if Sonos officially responded to the ‘new' information that you no longer had to recycle.

In all links above (including the one about ‘myaccount') , it still clearly states the devices will be deactivated/won't function after 21 days.

is there an official forum response someone can point me to?

@sjw: it is all very strange. If you see the best answer, you will see that there WAS a new program applicable after Mar 10 - I had also seen it - that did not need recycling deactivation but still had some references to recycling. That in itself was strangely worded.

Now, I see that this has been deleted and there is only the old deactivation program again, so the best answer is actually not valid as of now.

Something is brewing in Sonos.

And this answer turns out to not be definite as it was when posted. Or, I am seeing things, as someone here will jump in and allege.

Or maybe I am hallucinating...

Hi Sonos, do you have a response to this question?

Hi @sjw,

I messaged Sonos Sales support this morning, they will not brick your device if you make an order with them over the phone. They register your ‘Trade-in device’ so that no one else can register the same one, then give you the discount, leaving your original device in working order.

All the best,

David

Meaning you can’t sell the device? An action in order to minimise fraud risks(?)

I imagine it means they register the device as being used in an upgrade, so you cannot get multiple 30% discounts from a single device.  Shouldn’t prevent selling, though it may be nice to let the buyer know it is ineligible for getting the discount.

Some great answers all around. I can confirm officially that recycling a device is no longer a requirement of the Trade Up program. The main page on our website for Trade Up reflects this change, though there isn’t a community announcement to point to.

I confess that as of March 16 I am still confused by this … I just did trade, will my old products be remotely bricked and rendered useless or can I still use in a spare room/guesthouse?  Sorry if I have missed it ...

They will not be put into a recycle mode if you just did the Trade Up.

Thanks … sorry to have been dense … keep the great products coming!

Ahh...the March changes to the terms and conditions have re-appeared in modified form, and I think I see why. At this time, it isn’t important to ask why.

I called Sonos sales today and the rep assured me that I can sell the units that are “upgraded” and that the buyer will have no problems with putting them on their own account.

We’ll see though.

Good news: After adding three pieces to the Trade Up offer on my Sonos account, the confirmation email says the following about re-homing them:

Choose what
to do with your
old product
Continue using your old product, give it to someone else for a second life, take it to a certified e-recycling center, or return it to us.
