Not Connected error on new speaker set-up

1. I have a PLAY:1 connected to an ASUS RT-AC86U router. It works fine. I am attempting to connect two new PLAY:1s and a Beam to the system. On the controller on my iPhone the PLAY:1 is recognised but when I get to the page 'Please wait while the connection is completed', I get the message 'NOT CONNECTED. Your SONOS product was not found. If your product is a long way from your router...etc'.
I have moved the PLAY:1; plugged the PLAY:1 into the router; and rebooted the router. I have worked with only one PLAY:1 in case two confused the process. I have tried both PLAY:1s and the Beam separately. All to no avail. This appears to be a common problem and I have done all the community recomendations thus far.

What next?

Presumably the Play:1 is connected via WiFi. Disable 'Airtime Fairness' in the ASUS router.
