This is pretty exciting! Sonos is removing the wiring requirement

http://blog.sonos.com/news/our-vision-for-rock-solid-wireless-evolved/

We created the Sonos Wireless HiFi System to provide music lovers, like ourselves, everything we dreamed of for music in our homes – legendary sound and an easy, reliable way to play anything imaginable with freedom from the barriers of speaker cables. This essentially involved finding a way to make the wires invisible.

The network we created for music in your home, SonosNet, is our solution for the simple and reliable wireless experience you enjoy today. Starting from one component (in most cases, the Sonos BRIDGE) wired to your Internet router, our products communicate with one another to construct a wireless mesh network dedicated to your music. This ensures rock-solid signal strength with no interruption, even throughout the largest homes.

Wireless technology has improved over the last 10 years and alongside other investments in evolving your experience with the changing times, we are preparing to take SonosNet to the next level.

Today, we want to share our vision for the next step in wireless HiFi. We’ve found a way to deliver all the benefits of SonosNet without a product directly connected to your router. This new software solution will make Sonos simpler than ever. Start with a speaker and your smartphone, enter your WiFi password and Sonos takes care of the rest.

We will maintain the core function of SonosNet so that – when several players are linked together as a group – they continue to communicate directly with one another, keeping your music in perfect sync. There are some large homes, where all players are not in the range of the WiFi signal or challenging network environments, that will still benefit from the Sonos BRIDGE, but our diagnostics and early testing show that the majority of homes will work well with the new software solution.

To make sure we continue to deliver the most reliable and compatible system possible, we are conducting the most thorough and extensive real-world testing of this new software functionality that we’ve ever undertaken. You will hear more about this beta program in the coming weeks. Until we complete testing of this technology, wiring a BRIDGE (or other Sonos product) to your router is required.

For consideration in joining our Beta program, fill out this application.

Indeed. This will free up a bridge, I suppose, that can be used elsewhere if needed.
Will this address the need of people wanting to use their computer as a free zone player too?

No, of course it won't, how on earth do you jump to that conclusion?

You have some serious social skill communication problems. You are very insulting to people in this forum. Although you may be very knowledgeable about Sonos you need to learn how to communicate without attacking and belittling people. Does doing so make you feel superior? If so I feel sorry for you and hope you can overcome whatever demons are troubling you.

I know you'll have a response to this but it won't matter as I'll not be participating in your fodder.

I just asked a question, I don't know what you're reading into it but I'd suggest it says more about you than it does me.

Ajtrek, for what it's worth, my response a few days back was 100% the same as yours. I was going to respond with an 'Aah, bless, such a nice pleasant reply.' but I thought I wouldn't lower myself and just left it.
I agree with you but as he sees nothing wrong with 'what on earth' in a reply then there's little point in responding.
It does say more about you than him though - in a good way. Just little things like manners, confrontation and other little social skills.

I blocked his posts long ago after a similar experience. Not worth the added negativity to my day. I wish the board moderators would reign this type of behavior in. It might be appropriate for a political forum, but for a product informational/enthusiast forum, there's no place for it, and it drives people away. Just my $.02.
When I saw the response and thought about it, I realised that my question merited a Duh response:).
One thing to remember in all such fora is that what is missing is all the non verbal aspects of communication that can lead to conclusions that may be be unwarranted at times. Remembering that while posting and reading is therefore helpful.
All that said, this is quite a civilised and constructive place for Sonos users/potential users.

Yes please, how do I do this?

Found it "edit ignore list"

Agreed - although I have in the past read 'lhc's contributions with interest and have a great deal of respect for his knowledge I can no longer cope with his rudeness and lack of tolerance of other users' ignorance. I also will be blocking his contributions in the future.

Curious that the person I was actually talking to is the only one that doesn't seem offended.

Good to know about the blocking function as well, I might add a few people to my list but Kumar certainly won't be one of them, he's one of the more intelligent contributors to this forum, not to mention this thread (that WAS an insult to the rest of you incidentally, just so we're all clear...).

Very clear, and throwing insults around is not permitted. Please cool it. We don't want to have to resort to temporary bans.

I'm locking this thread. There's already another thread on this topic, so discussion can continue over there.
