Starting today, your Sonos players will need to be running software version 10.4 or higher in order to be controlled by Spotify apps on your devices.

Sonos 10.4 was released on September 10th, 2019, so most people have already gotten that update, to more recent versions.

For those who are still using older software and haven’t updated yet, you can continue to use the Sonos app to play Spotify on Sonos, but the Spotify app will be unable to control what’s playing using Spotify direct control. We always recommend keeping your Sonos system up to date with the latest software.

If you haven’t updated your Sonos players recently, please follow these steps:

Go to Settings > System > System Updates, or click the “Update Now” button, if it appears on your controller.

You can also enable automatic software updates if you haven’t done so under System > System Updates so that they update without your intervention, that way your system is up to date anytime you go to use it.

If you have any other issues relating to updating your system, please check this article: Error message when attempting to update Sonos system.

Since there was no change to Sonos software today,  that implies that Sonos updated their codebase with the 10.4 release months ago, and Spotify has finally rolled out the change to their own servers. Most interesting. Thank you, Edward!
