Have to ask twice to play Spotify music

Userlevel 2

Everything was working before the update.

I say “alexa, play metallica songs in living room”, and metallica starts to play. I can control volume, pause music, skip songs… no problem at all.

Now I go to the S2 iphone app, and play something different, lets say ACDC in spotify

Then if I say “alexa, play music”, instead of continuing with the ACDC it empties the playlist, shows the metallica song for a second, and then nothing plays. Have to ask again, and metallica starts playing.

Any idea whats going on?

I have tried disabling the skills, removing the playets, reinstalling the apps… everything.

This has recently happened for us (SONOS One G1, Alexa, Spotify).

I ask for something like, “Alexa, play Yellow Submarine”,

Alexa replies “Yellow Submarine Remastered 2009 by The Beatles on Spotify” but then silence.

If I repeat the command, I get the same response but the music starts.

Ah my bad! Even though it was somewhat therapeutical to unload the aggravation after experiencing the same problem in S2. :)

Great to see that it’s being worked on.

This has been happening to me ever since switching to the new Sonos app. My setup is Beam/Google/Spotify. Every single time I ask Google to play a song, it confirms my request and says “ok now playing [song name] on spotify.” But then nothing plays. If I ask again, I get the same confirmation but then the song plays. This happens every single time.

Hi Everyone,

We would like you to know that we are aware of this issue affecting some listeners, and that it will be addressed via a future software update.

I am having same issue with Alexa. Started in last couple of days.

Userlevel 2

Is someone on Sonos aware of this bug?? Do you plan to fix it? Clearly is happening to a lot of users since the update

btw, I think I flagged the thread as answered by mistake. How can I undo that? Thanks

I have had this problem since September when bought a pair of the new Ones to replace two Play1s. I assumed it was an issue with Alexa, so I’m pleased to find in this forum it is a bug with Sonos. Are the technical team working on a fix, since it seems there are many instances of this problem?

I’ve bought two Echo dots so I don’t have to keep repeating myself repeating myself.

Been happening to me for ages too.

I have the same issue. After playing Spotify through the Sonos app, I then have to try twice to get it to play via Alexa or Spotify Connect: https://en.community.sonos.com/music-services-and-sources-228994/playing-spotify-through-the-sonos-app-causes-issues-for-alexa-and-spotify-connect-6847787

I don’t know if anyone else has tried recently, but this issue appears to be fixed for me. I’m not sure if it was the 13.1.1 update that did it or something else.

But this morning I was playing music from Spotify through the Sonos app, and I then asked Alexa to play a different song - she played it fine.

I also tested to see if Spotify Connect worked first time after playing through the Sonos app - and it did.

Please, has anyone found a solution. It’s happening to more users, so it’s clearly a bug.

it was working weeks ago before the update.

Yep. Same here. Have to ask twice before I get anything to happen.

The same is happening when using Google Assistant.

Have you found any solution to this? This is not happening to me only, so looks like a bug ...

Happening to me as well. Very frustrating.

I have exactly same issue since the S2 update. Very frustrating and have to resort to using the app over voice service most of the time as should not have this problem with Spotify.

I still have the same issue. Tried all the usual fixes but nothing so far.

Is there a fix for this?

I changed my Sonos system from Alexa to Google assistant and the problem is exactly the same. Assistant responds telling you what it’s going to play and then nothing. asking again ALWAYS works.

Not a wifi issue as it happens on one of my Sonos one that is in the same room as the main WIFI AP.

Problem is with Sonos.

Entire network has been reset several times, this issue has been with us for several months now.

2 x One

2 x Play1

1 x Play5

S1 app

BT Whole Home WIFI

Thanks

I have had this problem the whole summer, it appeared right after that other Sonos-GA bug that the Sonos unit was suddenly not aware of its room anymore, (ref. this thread). As with that bug, I was hoping this issue also would eventually go away with an SW update, which it has not.

Below is my situation which has lasted some months now:

When issuing a voice command (GA) to Sonos in any room I have the following situation:

  • If SONOS is playing or has recently played via voice command (GA): No problem.
  • If SONOS is playing or has recently played from Spotify Connect: No problem.
  • If SONOS is playing or has recently played from its native app: I will have to ask twice. The first time it will confirm the command, but nothing will happen. The second time it will work. (asking again will always work)
    • This is so predictable that I have grown accustomed to just issue the command twice in a go, which sounds really stupid.
    • The song will go on to play without fail after the second time, subsequent commands will work as expected.

Now, you Paul A speaks of “stream limit” (the link within that thread is broken, Paul), my issue is not whilst Spotify is streaming anywhere else outside of Sonos, and as I have stated: The error also occurs while Spotify is not streaming anywhere at all. If idle-streams are accounted for in this “limit”, I would reply that Sonos is an expert on multi-room system which by its very nature should be able to handle one service (Spotify) throughout its whole system (my Sonos multi-room setup).

Thank you!

If someone were to look in this forum for this issue he would have found a lot of the same posts with the same behavior.

I hate to pile on, but I have started to notice this issue.   I have to ask Alexa twice to get something to play. I go to check the Sonos app, and the song is usually there but the play button is not engaged.

I have added a lot of new Sonos gear over the past few months.  I also worry that this all gets messy between the Alex app and how it names\manages devices and groups, and the Sonos App.  I am starting to feel like I just to factory reset everything and start clean.

That said, it is clear that many people are experiencing the “have to ask twice” problem.

Anyone out there have any luck with this issue?

It’s been on-going for awhile, would be great if Sonos could look into this issue rather than getting us to submit diagnostics and telling us we have wifi issues.

We have 6 speakers spread across 3 access points, they all have the same behavior and spotify always work on the second command.

Also have the same behavior of requiring two voice requests to get Spotify to begin playing.  And agreed that the developing consensus of it being a Spotify stream request seems to be correct.  The first voice request seems to cause Spotify to count a second stream, and stop the service.  The second request starts a new stream, since the stream count is now at zero.  I realize that solving these problems becomes trickier as the number of parties increases (Sonos, Spotify, Alexa), but do hope this integration can be worked out.  From this forum, it’s clear that it is a widespread problem, seems easy for the Sonos team to replicate.  I’d recommend that rather than having a Sonos customer service rep spending time telling people to work on their networks, they get the engineering team to replicate the issues and solve the underlying problem.

This is very annoying and happens all the time for me too. I can also recreate it if I have played a Spotify song through the Sonos app. Then open up the Spotify app and attempt to play a song in the Spotify app and select my Sonos speakers within Spotify. The first time I select it goes green for a split second then disconnects. Second time I select the Sonos speakers it always connects and plays.

Same exact issue here as well. I have to repeat my requests to play music through voice commands as well as Spotify Connect. First attempt says it will play and nothing plays, then I repeat my action a 2nd time and it plays fine.

Even just the simple task of “connecting” (not playing music yet) to a Sonos speaker through the Spotify app (using Spotify connect) requires 2 attempts.

Made an account to pile on. Since a few months I have to ask sonos / google home devices twice to play some music on spotify. I get a response that it will start playing and then silence. Ask again and it works. Never need to do it three times, always two. Hope source of issue can be found as this is pretty annoying.
