Alexa talking over beginning of song

I know others have this issue.  (going on 4 years for me) is there a resolution or am I just wasting my time with Sonos products working with Alexa playing music?  I don't want to throw anymore good money at this problem.  the speakers sound great and I love them but the main purpose is to stream music with Alexa and it is just too frustrating.  I play instruments and like to play a song on Sonos to learn and it just isn't efficient to restart song after asking to play.

Yes, it is annoying, and as far as I know, there isn’t a solution. I don’t think it’s a Sonos problem but an Amazon Alexa problem.

Well, this problem has been annoying people since the launch of the Sonos One. The problem, however, seems to be exclusive to Sonos speakers, as it doesn’t occur on Amazon’s own Echo speakers at all.

Instead of speaking over the music to announce what’s playing, Alexa tells you what she’s going to play before actually starting to play the music, which is how things should be.

Sonos don’t seem to be too bothered with fixing existing problems with voice assistants on their voice-enabled speakers though, or adding features already available to smart speakers from Amazon or Google or even other third parties.

It is really annoying and has been bothering me for years.

It is a small thing at first but over time the frustration of not being able to hear the first few seconds of a song on your (high end) sound system builds up. Every other month someone comes along and reopens a thread similar to this, but there never is a solution for it.

After all this time a company as big as Sonos should get their act together and fix it already...

Sonos bought out a voice recognition/AI company called Snips in late 2019. Hopefully we’ll see something from that technology soon.

I know it sounds like a simple thing to fix, but it might be something that is mostly out of Sonos control.  In a situation where the Sonos speaker playing music is different than the device where voice command is made, a Sonos amp and echo dot for example, the Sonos speaker doesn’t know when Alexa is done talking.  It receives the command to play music and proceeds, unaware of what other audio is playing in the room.  Alexa would need to delay sending the command till she’s done talking or send a command to delay playing music till a certain time.  Neither of which Sonos could control.

I get that the Sonos One could be a different situation, since the music playing device and Alexa speaking device are the same device, but I suspect it doesn’t work differently.  Two separate modules are used for music playback and voice control, with shared control over the speaker….I’m guessing.  That certainly would make it easier to have mic-less versions of Sonos products.

And yes, echos handle this fine, so in theory, so should Sonos products.  Echos were originally built as voice assistants, and essentially can’t do anything but playback audio through voice control.  The Sonos was designed and built long before voice assistants even existed, and it does not make sense for Sonos to redesigned every thing to accommodate this feature...if that’s what it would take to do it.  Don’t know, still guessing.

Point being, although it certainly would be a welcome feature, I don’t know that it’s a matter of Sonos not caring enough to fix this issue so much as it could be a rather big squeeze for the juice.
