Would it be possible to use 2 moves as surrounds for a playbar and sub? I have an open livingroom and no good place to float surrounds permanently however temporary placements of surrounds would be awesome.

No, the Sonos software does not allow you to use the Move as a surround speaker.

Is there a hardware limitation or should it just be a Sonos software update?

This comes down to a functionality and experience question in a lot of ways. The Move is designed to move around. A pair of them works for stereo, but it’d be a pretty poor overall experience to have your surrounds suddenly drop off because someone picked one up and carried it away, or the battery ran out, or it is in Bluetooth mode and wasn’t put back to WiFi when it was put back on the base.

I’d recommend instead getting a single Move for the go, and a pair of Sonos One SLs or Sonos Ones depending on if you need the microphones.
