Play 5 Gen1 & new 5

Currently, I have a Play 5 gen 1 that I use an Apple airport express to play my music because it’s an airplay router. Works great.

I just purchased a new 5, and someone told me that I can “group” them together, and both will work.

Not sure if that’s true, and it’s my first experience trying to do this.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Thanks.

That’s what he told me to do and your example explains it

Great, thanks so much!

Are you referring to streaming the audio to both Airplay2 beacons? - if so, then ensure the AE, linked to the line-In on the Play:5 (gen1) is Airplay2 compatible, (some older AE’s may only support Airplay v1).

Then both devices (AE & Play Five) need to be checked in your iOS Airplay device list to stream audio to both - see ‘example’ screenshot taken from an iOS device.

Unfortunately you will not be able to group the Play:5 and Five together to play the same music at the same time. The Play:5 (Gen 1) can only run on the Sonos S1 app, and the Five can only run on the S2 app.
